doubtful.. ive read about peoples tail gates breaking off or cracking..

i think a good solution is to get a 7.00R16 tyre on a LJ rim, that could be an option. Or make up a tyre carrier.

I had a 235 on my jimny tailgate, and it seemed a bit weak for that

mine doesnt seem to have an issue with the 235 on it (approx 30in) but it also just rests on the bumper too so you may have clearance issues with 31

nope. my top hinge broke out of the body with a 31. it now rides in the back.

I have mine in the back, Bolted. I am using the original holder bolted to the floor.

Try making a rear wheel carrier.

what id like to do is somehow do a permanent fitting in the rear of the car, attached to the roll bar... have the tyre attached to the side of that somehow... anyone done anything similar?? would love to see pics, if people dont mind... not trying to hijack thread, just looking to expand it slightly... hope u dont mind omysierra

I made this carrier in 2 hours out of scrap steel. Only used the grinder twice. It is square to the bar believe it or not.


At work we tested some of the tyre carriers from well known companies and they have failed the fatigue testing.

I'm still expecting mine to fail too.

EDIT: it is square to the bar etc, just not sitting flush as under the latch is packed with rubber, to stop the bar rattling etc.

The hardest part is getting the spare tyre onto the carrier.

EDIT2: I used a trailer stub axle and welded it into the rear bar. Got toyota/datsun trailer hub with bearings and cut the face off.
That way I know the hinges can carry the load easily, wont seize, and are semi sealed.
I still intend to the reinforce it, but having the beer fridge in the workshop makes it really hard to start and finish jobs.

Attatched to the rollbar you will get blind spot issues. I like to see where every corner of my sierra is.

good point... id still like to see if anyone has done it. i reckon directly behind the drivers seat wouldnt be much of an issue... i might try using rope to hold it in place and go for a drive tomorrow, see if it does restrict much view...

when i lived in town i didn't bother with a spare tyre because if i was playing in the bush
it was always with other sierras or i would just ring my MRS and get her to bring me a tyre.
trips were different though and i have a mount for inside the car.

dave's solution although i believe that he has been playing with a grinder and now has a buggy

do you mean the hard top or the soft top? the hard top was mine and i found it ok.
it did limit vision a bit but i use my mirrors and had no dramas. the beauty of
having the spare there was ya didn't loose any room in the back. i did try it flat
on the floor with a bit of ply on top but it made it to hard to get shit out of the
fridge. on my hard top i could fit the 40ltr fridge, 50ltr esky, outboard motor and 6 jerry
cans on the floor and then stack the light shit on top
