wat batteries u running wet or dry cell
is 18v the open circuit voltage or the measured voltage
u could hook them straight up to a wet cell and just keep a eye on the voltage every hour if it goes up to say 15v disconect them for a while then hook them back up or connect a light to them to take the excess voltage
just keep a eye on water level and if it starts to boil just add more load
we run 20v in to our wet batteries at our farm off a generator and they still going
ps the pay off period of a domestic system is about 4 -5 years so that 20 years of free power after that

I got my Solar Cell from BCF, its only 5Watt/0.5amp, its a heavy duty one, it can withstand 25mm hail, for $60, its for a boat, but will work just as well on a 4x4... i got it to recharge a 2nd battery for accessories, like a fridge, but then i changed cars, he he... but it will come with me on any extended trips... always handy...

I got a small pannel (hail, drop and kick proof to a degree $100) to use as a back up for my Jimny when im out and when I'm washing me car with the music blaring wildly... Its about 400mm x 250mm and its rated at 10Amp... Not sure why the larger pannels arent as powerful???
I got the solar power regulator from Jay Car Electronics for $25 and rigged it up so its all water proof and sealed... so washing it or it getting rained on isnt an issue at all...
I havent had an issue with it at all and its small and super powerful to charge up my battery, the regulator makes sure that the voltage output is stable and at 13volts to ensure that your battery isnt cooked... Also the regulator makes sure that the electricity isnt bled into the pannel at night, which happens alot with those pannels that dont have this modulator...
Anyhow hope it helps...

Are you sure its 10amps, that is a really big load rating for such a small Panel ?
A 1000mm x 500mm Panel might be able to handle a 10amp load...
Mine is 490mm x 340mm, and it doesnt have anywhere near a 10amp load rating...
The one i got has the regulator and blocking diode built in... just plug it into a Gig Lighter Socket, or directly to the battery, and its good to go...

Having said that, would be keen to read any papers you can find backing up your statement because it's always good to get an alternative view.
"Published science" also said the earth is flat, man can't go faster than 50 mph, earth is the center of the universe, man-caused global warning exists and Kylie Minogue hasn't had plastic surgery.

I was in at Jaycar the other day, they had 80w panels on sale for $450.00
I bought a solar reg there. dead easy to install
I run a 74 watt panel. It charges the battery will the 40 engel is running. Biggest problem it camping amongst trees.

Ah ha, ok, yep thought it sounded a bit odd, lol, yep 1.6amps should be ok for just the stereo, as long as you dont have a Sub Amp running as well, lol...
