hey all

just did an oil change and filter change on my G16b vitara with valvoline 15-40, i bought a 5L container. dropped the oil and old filter, replaced new filter and topped up oil till it was readable, then started up the engine so i would fill the oil filter. had to check a couple of times to get it to the correct level but stopped when it reached the"F" mark (also the full 5L jug) i didnt think it would take all of it.

as i didnt do the change at home but at a mates house, had the manual at home, i wasnt able to check the correct amount. but now im home i check the oil again it was high about 10mm above the "F" on the stick. also looked in the book and it says 4.7 qts (4.7 qt(US Liq) = 4.4L) by the looks of it i have to much oil.

is this a bad thing?? also i noticed that my car didnt get to the normal running temp (normally 1/4) on the way home, would this be because of the extra oil?

when was the last time you changed the oil?
oil helps cool running temp so having new oil would help cool the engine
having too much oil will make it run cooler but i wouldnt say a noticable amount of difference
if it is reading over full take some out. owners manuals are not always correct

I wouldnt worry about it, I always stick all 5 litres in when I change the oil cause thats where it reads full

if its too much the crank will soon fling it up and burn it off

havin only a small amount over full wont do ur engine any harm

Maybe old school but I always prime the oil filter - just fill it to the brim and let it settle - do it a couple of times - doesn't have to be full but needs to have oil in it... This will save you if the oil pump doesn't pick up for some reason

The extra oil may make the car run hot and is generally not good for it as it may add some extra resistance to the crank and con rods when they slap the oil on the way down.

Also if you sump seals or front or rear seals are dodgey they will leak

I'd drain a bit out of it to be safe

As said, don't worry about it. If you have OCD and really need to get the level correct, just dump a bit.

is it a mineral oil or a synthetic oil??

i have noticed sythetic oils tend to expand more then mineral oils do.

i would check the level when the vehicle is cold. and if it is still over i would remove it till it is at the F mark.

i'd drain a bit out dude - full is full.... if its more than that its operating out side it designed levels, which is never a good thing.

thanks guys for the reply, my next door neighbor did the same thing and used a 60ml syringe and a bit of pipe to get that little bit off oil out. i thought to my self "well i have the arvo free why not give it a go" and well...it worked took out about 200-300mls (took about 1.5hrs lol) its still a about 5mm over on the dip stick but from what u guys are saying im not going to worry.

its running at the correct temp as well now, so thats good and no i dont have OCD, i just like to have the engine running to a reasonable std. saying that its not perfect, drips a bit of oil and i think the timing belt has creeped forward as when it runs at certain rpm, you can hear it rubbing on the cover but only at 800rpm anything lower or higher it doesn't.

I cant believe we have a thread about 200ml too much of oil and people saying its a problem!!!!

even a litre of oil across the surface are of the sump is bugger all extra level and the crank is certainly not even close to the oil level, if even 2l made a difference i'd be suprised

ahaha when i think about it now, yes i no it is a bit of a stupid thing to ask. but hey as they say "no question is a stupid question, only stupid answers"

had a audi that had too much oil come into work (and yes before anything is said about them i already know what fine peices of motoring equiptment they are) it had about 800ml to 1 litre to much it was bellowing white smoke out of the exhaust and was running like a nag of shit

dropped the oil and changed the filter and adjusted the level to full and the car was all good. (smoked for a little bit till the excess oil that was sitting in the exhaust was burned away)
