I'm after a few recommendations as to which high pressure and low pressure/high volume pumps I should run for my surge tank setup. I have a 1L surge tank and would like a quiet high pressure pump, preferably Bosch.

I know a few people run the Bosch 044 but this seems like a noisy option? Overkill?

Also, what flow rate should I be looking for for the low pressure/high volume pump? (lift pump)

(Yes I searched but came up empty handed)

Cheers,
Jimmy

coily tank like everyone else?

any high pressure pump is enough, if you go to big you are just pushing fuel around and heating it up.

for the lift pump if you are returning the high pressure back to the surge tank then its only got to be big enough to feed the engine, but then you have hot fuel, if the high pressure returns to the tank then it needs to feed more than your high pressure pump, should you wish to use an 044 youll need a holley blue or something

I run a Bosch 044 as a HP pump and can't hear it at all.
The lift pump to the surge tank is a Facet clacker and is noisy as hell.

I run a bosche 044 pump.
It was loud as hell until I fitted a clacker style lift pump and surge tank.
Now the lift pump and surge tank are in place, the bosche pump has no restriction on the inlet side and runs silent.

The fuel system as a whole runs silent once it is primed.
The lift pump is noisy when it runs dry.

I just run a swb vit efi tank with pump. No mess with hoses/wiring/noise/etc

I did run a coily tank. Bolted straight in with vit efi pump. But majorly dinted it.

Was it hard to fit? How much modification was required to mount it?

hmmm, seems like a bit of work to mount the Vit tanks. Plus I haven't done my welding course yet! I reckon I'll stick with the surge tank setup as I already have a nice undented Sierra tank and tank guard.

Also, what's a clacker style pump? How does this differ to a standard electric lift pump?

Same thing, just a cheap pump from ripco or stupidcrap.

yeah i've got the same setup. Clacker above my rear diff that pumps through a filter to the surge tank in the engine bay, above my left tyre. From the surge tank it flows down about 2" to the high pressure fuel pump which pumps it to the EFI system... It continually runs, pushing fuel around in circles...

The fuel filter doesnt restrict flow as it is between the surge tank and fuel tank, and the clacker makes a loud clicking noise for about 5 seconds when you turn the accessories on, and continuously when the main fuel tank runs dry (i like it because it tells me i have about 8km left before i run out of fuel... but you actually get about 30km notice because when the fuel starts sloshing around and the clacker loses suction you hear it start clicking until it gets suction again)

the setup i run is a black carter pump into a surge tank then a bosh 044 in a ignition round coil holder with some thin rubber around it. The setup has been going at least 6 years now

The low pressure lift pump I used looked like a small version of the bosch pump, brand was 'Racer' or something like that. I think I got it from autopro. I originally used a Facet style pump and found it loud and then it died after 2 weeks (they are not waterproof as I found out  ).

I used the bosch 044 for the high pressure pump and I had the fuel return directed back into the top of the surge tank to keep it topped up. Overflow from surge tank went back into the fuel tank.

With this setup I could not hear the pumps over the engine unless I stuck my head in the tray next to them.

Heres a pic of my setup. I had more room in the corner due to LWB. You can see the lift pump at the back and the high pressure pump at the front.

I got the inspiration for my setup from the pic of zooker's, he helped me out with a bit of info at the time too (thanks again matey!). Only mine is not nearly as neat as you can see.

It's also pretty noisey as the sound is amplified by the tray bolted to the top of the tub. The pumps were reasonably cheap from some dude called fixmypump on ebay. The high pressure pump is similar to an old skyline jobby while the lifter pump is a clacker style. Works fine but i will eventually replace it with the vitara tank in the shed. One day....

so a vit tank has all the pump and junk on the inside?

what is a surge tank?

and would it help my car run better at all (carby 1300) if i chucked a elec fuel pump?

cheers :D

Yep, vit efi tank has an intank pump. Surge tank (also called swirl pot) is the little tank you can see in the above photos. The lifter pump supplies the surge tank which then supplies the high pressure pump which isn't designed for sucking fuel up and out of a fuel tank. Don't know about fitting electric pumps to carbied engines. Maybe if you were running big carbs and needed excessive amounts of fuel? Somebody else will know more about it than me.

the surge tank is so the high pressure pump always has fuel to supply to the engine, unlike a carby car where you have a buffer in the float bowl sucking air from the tank in a efi car leads to a lean out and possible damage.

What's best for filters; a low pressure fuel filter between tank and lift pump or a high pressure filter between h/p pump and motor? Or both? Or doesn't it matter? It appears that bron5on has both whereas zooker only has a low pressure filter. (possibly another one elsewhere?)

Run both.
Low pressure filter before lift pump, high pressure filter after pressure pump.

Give an engine enough fresh clean air, oil and fuel and it'll last practically forever.
Why skimp on it for the sake of a few bucks?

Too true. Rightio then, the parts list seems to be in order now. Should hopefully have everything by the weekend, ready for installation.

Thanks everyone :P

My low pressure filter is in the wrong spot (after the lifter pump), but at the time I was more concerned with providing clean fuel to the high pressure pump (probably not an issue) as I didn't really know what i was doing. And now I just can't be bothered changing it. Also notice the unbolted clamp on the filter and instead relying on a cable tie
