I am in the process of rebuilding my front and rear diffs with 5.1 gears and was looking at locking them .

From what I have been told I would like to try and avoid a Lockrite in the rear due to the harshness when on-road (will probably have to save my bikkies for a ARB air locker).

For the front though I notice that Calmini have a LSD which they indicate is 'progressive' which sounds a bit milder and friendlier than a Lockrite style that locks in and out upon load .

Has anyone used one of these Calmini LSDs or have an opinion on them for the front (and maybe rear) of a Vitara? They are twice the price of the Lockrites ...

if you're willing to spend that much for an LSD my recommendation would be to keep saving and get the air-locker. I did a heap of research on what to go with and so far as i can tell LSD's are really good for on-road use but offroad don't offer anywhere near the performance of either auto or air lockers. there are a heap of threads on this on here but in a nutshell auto can be good as long as you can handle the quirkiness onroad and learn to drive around it, but air's are the best option for convenience and solid performance, especially for the rear diff.

Others may have different opinions on LSD's but that's just what i've found from talking to people with them and researching.

I've got an auto locker in the rear and first day out of the workshop I was questioning whether I should have had it put in...

BUT once I equalised my tire pressures (were 18psi / 21 psi), put a tube of Nulon G70 in, figured out how it was working and adjusted my throttle control to suit, I honestly wouldn't know it's there except for in tight low speed turns (carparks etc) where you hear a regular, discrete 'click, click, click' as the dog clutch slips over the side gear teeth.

Thrash it on road and drive it roughly and it'll bang and carry on though, but drive it within its comfort zone and its great.

With the front - yep would be great to have an air locker but can't justify the coin. I've got an auto up front as well and offroad just lock the passenger hub in for most things. I tend to cruise most stuff in 2WD Low ... if I get stuck or hit a tough section I'll lock in 4WD Low which with one hub in / one hub out gives me 3WD (driver's wheel undriven). REALLY get stuck then hop out and lock in the driver's hub. That's the bit that sucks. Oh, and steering with front hubs both locked and no powersteering is a bit annoying.

I'm getting an auto for the rear soon so i'll report back when it goes in. is ya GV a shorty or LWB? not sure if it would make a difference but just another thing to consider...

Calmini have not sold these for years. I tried getting them probably 2 years ago, and got strung along for 3 months before they admitted they had no intention of getting more.

I'm not sure if this is still the case, but they have been 'CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE' for a damn long time!

I've got the lock-right in the front of my sierra and it is pretty bloody good. The only bad thing I will say is that the steering gets a bit hairy.

My mate has got a air locker in the back of his jimny and it's awesome.... that is until you really need it and you realise that the flange on the back of the transfer case has rubbed a hole in the shitty air line that arb use for the install. If you don't fit it yourself, make sure you at least check where and how the installers have run the air line. They seem to have a tendancy to c*ck it up.

My brothers ute has an LSD in it ( i think calmini but not 100% sure as it was in it when he bought it). Its better than an open centre, but still no where near a locker. Road manners seem okay, but considering my brothers ute runs boggers it isnt exactly a great example.
