I have been mildly temped lately to put a 1.3 into my sierra. Just Collect parts slowly when they come up cheap.

Has anyone driven both and is the differance that much?

i was looking at one site and its only like 5kw more for the 1.3. But maybe it has more torque.
Plus the 5 speed would be handy.

no need to muck around with points on a 1.3
1.3 have a more complex carby
1.3 is lighter
1.3 is newer so probably easier to get good parts
5 speed isnt all that great once you get big tires

I reckon my 1 litre was better than my 1.3, different diff gears may of helped but it used to pull 110 all day with 31's, 1.3 used to struggle

if it was me I would just go straight to the 1.6, but you will need a 1.3 bonnet or bodylift (probably need for a 1.3 anyway depending on which trans tunnel you have
