I'm about ready to tear my hair out. I've had this noise under load for a while now and I figured it was the countershaft. So I changed the transfer case over and the noise is still there.

The noise relates to the speed of the jackshaft, that is, it increases with speed but at a much faster rate in low range. Last night I noticed that the uni on the back of the jackshaft had some play in it in one direction. (i hope i'm explaining that correctly. the uni moves in 2 directions, one of those has lateral play)

I'm told it can't be the gearbox because it makes the noise in 4th gear as well. It isn't the tailshaft because when I put the transfer in neutral and accelerate in gear the noise is still there.

If anyone has any ideas I'm am willing to offer my first born son/daughter as a gift of thanks.

Jack up the rear & put stand's under the axle's or spring's, start it up & get it to make the noise, then listen to where it come's....

Unlock your front hub's & putt in 2wd to, for safety..

Because the noise is apparent while the transfer case is in neutral I don't need to lift the rear wheels, It's hard to pinpoint the noise, it sounds like it's coming from somewhere between the "S" badge on the front and the tail lights.

Ok seriously now, it does sound like it's coming from the jackshaft. I spoke to Graeme at suzi auto but he doesn't think it would make noise. I replaced the uni-joints a few months ago. I think maybe the watchamacallit that holds the uni on is a bit too wide therefore allowing lateral movement.

whats it sound like? Are you sure its not the thrust bearing or spigot bearing?

could it be something in the input of the transfer??
just because it is in neutral doesnt meen gears inside the box arent moving

Can't be thrust or spigot bearings, the noise changes with output speed not engine speed. The noise is harmonic.

Can't be the transfer case, I swapped it over. The only original transfer parts are the flanges.

I am pretty sure it'll be the jackshaft output uni-joint but I haven't seen any other zook with that problem. I can't seem to track one down to swap and test.

Drop out the jackshaft between gearbox and transfer case and see if it still makes the noise. The only way to rule out whether its downstream of the gearbox or not.

If the noise goes away, suspect a worn input shaft, or most likely counter shaft/needle bearing in the transfer.

It could just be a uni, depending on how savage the noise is. Why not replace the simple part for $30 and peace of mind that it won't fail you in the future.
