Hey all ... Pick up some saas seats tomorrow really really cheap.. ( that is the only reason I am getting them)

I hear people say they are hard to fit into a Sierra. My main question is why?? What makes it difficult.

If any one has fitted them some picture or tips on how to fit them would be grately appreciated

They are hard because the Sierra rails don't line up with the holes in the seat base...

firstly speak to an engineer.

second buy enough 40x4mm steel to span front and rear of each rail.

measure the bolt spacing from to rear of the seats and bolt/weld the steel to your existing rails with this spacing.

place your seat on rails to make sure you have clearance everywhere.

drill cross braces to correct bolt spacing and bolt the seat up making sure you use 8.8 bolts or higher.

Picked them up this morning.. Am very delighted with them and can't wait to put them in.. I really got them for a steal.


Will take pics when I am putting them in so I can show you how I did it. Will most like do it the way shakes said .. Not going to weld them though.

How much wider/ narrower are the mounting holes on the new seats?? Just assuming that 40x4 will be the right material for the job is probably not the best practice.....

Cheapo SaaS seats.

Mounting is a pain in the arse!!!

Holes need to be countersunked etc.

Make sure YOU USE grade 8 high tensile bolts when you mount your seats , and yes you will need countersunk bolts , allen head type , DO NOT WELD your seat runners , Cheers Paul.

Will let you know how I go about fitting them.

Not assuming anything till they are out.. Only reason I got them was cause
it was a clean swap on something that cost me nothing and I havent used them in years.

Generally seat rails are made from 3mm formed sections. The bending into a shape like a channel or angle increases the rigidity of the member dramatically. So simply stating that bolting a piece of 4mm flat bar onto the rails, and then 'enjoy', without seeing the seats, the span between the rails and the mounting points on the seats is a little careless.

4mm May have been acceptable for your application, but that doesn't automatically make it right for everyones.

I've had a hand in a few different cars all engineered in vic all with mounts made that way and in very similar fashions (couple of toyota sprinters, a range rover and a holden nova) which isn't saying it's the safest way, but the best way to get seat rails engineered.

Can you describe or even better describe and add photo's of how you would do it with a generic aftermarket seat onto stock sierra rails?

This is for a ute, and recaros, which is about as easy as it gets. Countersunk head G10.9 screws into seats. Then G8's into ally bar. All up it cost $60 to mount 2 seats, and there is NO way this will fail under reasonable crash conditions.





Just because this worked on a ute with recaros, does not necessarliy mean its the best method for a vitara with Saas, or a sierra with autotechnias etc.

So you see what I mean about making a statement that one material is THE material to use. Some people will read what you have said and take it as gospil, cos the interweb said it was true.

is there no way to utilise the standard rails and maybe just mount a plate to the base of the seat and mount that to the standard rails so that it works as a standard seat still?

thats what i plan on doing mate...

pick up the new ones tomorrow and will try and get them fitted throughout the week...

did you pull the drivers seat out yet?? you were saying its got some brackets already on it??

mine is sorta like fatzook has explained.

i have one autotechnica seat on drivers side of my 89 model hardtop.I used 50x8mm flat bar and some countersunk m8 bolts aswell as the standard ones that came out of the zuk seats to start with,little 6mm i think.

It has been a couple of years since i fitted mine but was an arvo job after work one friday.The countersunk HT bolts go through the flat bar and into the race seats and the standard zook ones went down through flat bar and into original runners.No welding etc and is engineer approved

yeah took out drivers seat and flat bar that has been mounted towards the back matches up perfectly with the holes on the seat but the front hole in the seat are no where near anything to mount to. also if i fitted into the back holes as is i wouldn't be able to 'slide' the seat it would be in a fixed position.
