Hey guys, a little while back I bought Greg's G16b engine from his 94 vitara EFI LWB JLX off him.
Since then I've spent a bit of time tidying it up and replacing the seals and belts etc, so it's ready to drop in.
I've also bought one of Ben's adapter kits.
I'm hoping to get started with the conversion this weekend, so I just thought I'd quickly ask if anyone had any advice or experience to share before I begin? Past mistakes? Best practice?
I've done a bit of a search and haven't seen any guides or step by steps, so I assume it's a relatively straight forward job... Fingers crossed.

Its pretty straight forward except for the wiring.

Haha yeah, the wiring part has me a bit worried.
Fortunately he hasn't cut the wiring harness anywhere, so that should make life a touch easier... But still... Not looking forward to that.

Allow an extra week.
Every time I have swapped a motor (except like for like) it has taken a week longer than planned.

i usually connect the gearbox to the motor outside of the car and slide the whole lot in together, then you don't have to muck around with lining up the gearbox by yourself.

I did this with mine. With no radiator in the car it is quite easy.
I also had the engine running on a spare chassis before I put it in the car. That way I know I had the wiring right

Hmm sounds like a good idea. It really just slides right in?
Unfortunately I don't have a spare chassis lying around, so I'll just have to wing it.

do you have the fuel system sorted?Lift pump, swirl pot, high pressure main feed pump...extractors(if you haven't already got some, look into it as some go VERY close the the sierra gearbox)

Hi,
if you are on the northside of brissy, you are more than welcome to come & have a look at mine if you want to..
my sierra has the early g16B in it (denso ECU, three wire AFM), but most of the other hardware is fairly similiar to the '94 engine.
cheers,
Chris

I hear the suzi manifold has a nasty habit of cracking? Might have to pick up a set (especially if oem manifold won't fit). And for fuel, I was just thinking of getting an external pump and joining it in the main line. Or do you think this would cause it to run too rough (with possible irregular fuel delivery)? nissvit wrote: Hi,

Cheers Chris, I may just take you up on that.

extractors will be a lot better..helps the engine breathe and reduces the heat as the OEM manifolds restrict the flow and cause them to get hot,so makes sense that they crack...
As for fuel, your standard tank is for the carbi g13a?so the tank won't have any internal baffles...so if you just hook up a high pressure pump...it will be ok while the tank is full(even though it will put strain on the pump depending where you mount it) but as soon as the fuel stats to drop, the engine will lean out around corners and while off-road(approach and departure angles along with side to side movement)this is because the carbi engine uses very low pressure and the carbi stores fuel in the float so you don't really notice it....
In conclusion...you will need a lift pump(just a cheap carbi LOW pressure pump around $30-$60)
a swirl pot(the bigger the pot the more fuel you have in reserve for the high pressure pump but they are normally around 1-2L and cost between $40-$160 depending on whether its new or second hand..make sure you get one that is fully welded ally or S/S and not one bolted together as they will LEAK!)
and the high pressure pump(just get a VL Turbo fuel pump..they are around $120 new...)
When wiring them up make sure you use the ECU to trigger a relay to run 12V fused..
If you need a hand with how to set it up...Let me know I'm more than happy to help
Cheers
Jono

Im just running an external VL pump mounted very close to the standard tank up on the chassis rails. Works fine, been like this for 6 months now. Only get starvation issues when im done to the final few liters of the tank. Apart from that no issues what so ever, pump is quite and doesnt cavitate.

Awesome stuff guys. Thanks a lot for your help.. Really.
Cheers for that Jono, I haven't purchased anything other than a fuel pump yet, so I'll probably just carry on with the conversion, then follow your advice next week.
There's that much room in the engine bay, i can't see it being much more difficult doing that with the engine in..
Anyone know of any extractors for sale? Or a good place to buy new?
