My bro did that with the old stereo when he put it in. At one point they got it working, then when he turned the headlights on it turned off

He had the earth from the set hooked up the the dash light wire, oldest trick in the book and a great one from the 'I'm a fucking Electrician I know how to wire shit in my Hilux up group', indecently Toyota use a somewhat mostly black wire for the dash lights
