hmm bit vague, but as I read, the engine will not turn over ?

That has nothing to do with the dizzy.

Its turning over but will not start even tho you have spark ?

If this is the case, you may well need to time it with TDC and number 1.

Inside the dizzy is a rotor which spins round to send the spark to the right plug. If you just throw it in without lining it up, it won't be putting the spark to the right place at the right time...

if you didnt put goo on the oring the best thing for you to do is get the engine around to no 1 TDC compression (pull no1 plug and put your finger over the hole to feel it compressing while you turn the crank over by hand) and the pop the cap and pull the housing and rotate the dizzy back and pop it on and keep trying till it lines up with no1 plug lead, this should get your ignition timing back to where it was too

Wish it was. The dizzy only goes 1 way!

Now I have tried -pulling the dizzy cap off
- lifting points(& housing) and twisting to No1
- put dizzy back and still didnt go

I have tried so much my battery died

Ok I think I know what you did wrong and I know how to fix it.

1)open the glove box

2)look for a pull lever

3)put a label on it that says "don't touch"

4)find someone that knows what they are doing.

I'm not trying to be a smart arse (ok so maybe I am) but as a general rule, it's not a good idea to pull bits off your car if you're not sure what they do or how they work. I learnt this the hard way as a kid when I told my cousin that I could fix his tooth instead of going to a dentist.

In the end, going in half cocked just costs you more money.

I had a problem a while back with my vitara and it wouldn't kick over. At first I thought the dizzy button would only go on one way, but it actually had 3. Not sure about sierras.

Position 1: Engine would turnover 2 or 3 cycles and then have a slow one.
Position 2: Engine turns over but won't start.
Position 3: Perfect.

Make sure your conections inside the dizzy and on the dizzy button are all clean too.

The dizzy itself may only go one way, but once its out you can spin the rotor around and then put it back in again...

Only works if you've timed it to the wrong cylinder, not if you haven't bothered timing it at all...

Matfan. The last thing I need right now is a smart arse! I have inherited the car through my fathers death and cannot afford the funeral and a mech.
When I relised the oil running down the rear of my engine wasnt my head gasket I thought I could give it a crack.

So he I am, thanks to all those who offered genuine suggestion.

Pics help. :P

Have a looky here this will show you what the guys are saying about the position of the rotor at TDC (Top Dead Centre)

http://www.auszookers.com/index.php?nam ... ght=timing

You can get TDC at 2 spots in the 4 stroke cycle. On the compression stroke and the exhaust stroke. TDC for timing has to be the compression stroke cause thats when the spark is needed for the power stroke. Use Royce's suggestion about feeling the air coming out. Ie Compression Stroke.

Easiest Way for me was to feel the fly wheel (bottom fan belt pully)
Turn the engine around until the little V groove mark is facing up sort of. (There are timing marks on the timing cover in the front. Hard to see as its black, but you can feel them.
Then open your dizzy cap. The arm should be facing upper right approx. Where number one plug connect.

This way, you will at least get it in the ball park area so you can adjust after.

Hope that helps

It helped heaps thank guys! just ran my battery down trying the wrong way. It was flat when I knew about TDC. I do have the markings on my bottom pulley so will get battery charged and try again! I think I will get it
