OK, so I've reached the point where I'm starting to look into the engine swap for my car, but I need to know a few things before I decide which way to go.
Firstly, it WILL be a G series motor that goes in.
I'm currently thinking between G16B and G13BB. Obviously in the ideal world a G16B is the best option but I have some doubts about doing this conversion.
I will be doing the job myself, unless I win Lotto, and a few bits concern me somewhat. Mainly things like modding sumps and oil pickups, which appears beyond my abilities.
Are there any similar issues to be contended with if I go a Jimny G13BB? Or will this be a much more strightforward swap?
Any advice/opinions welcome.

If you do full RUF at the same time, you can run the G16 sump and pickup.
I'd definately go for the G16 over the BB, as you get more power and torque, with similar costs involved with both conversions. Mods to your electrical, fuel systems will be identicle. The only thing I can see being cheaper/ easier are no engine adaptor kit.

Doesn't a full RUF involve a chassis extension?
I'm trying to steer clear of any fabrication work as I have never welded anything in my life, and I don't have access to the sort of tools to do the job...

g13b is a good option, lots more power and heaps of fun to drive!

He's talking about the BB from the jimny. Not the g13b from the GTi.

I'll spell this out for you.
All engine conversions have their complexities. There is no such thing as a simple swap. You need to make friends with this fact.
Being in a zook club affords you the opportunity to ask for help. I'm sure there are plenty of perthians with the skills and tools you need to borrow that could lend you a hand to get through the tougher parts of the conversion, like welding.
The G16 swap is probably the most simple and cost effective swap to do. If you don't want to modify the oil pickup ( which is VERY simple to do ) the RUF is your only option. RUF will be more involved as there is a chassis extention involved.
If I were you, i would assemble all the parts you need to do the swap, have the loom chopped and ready to go, and then get a few mates over on a saturday with the promise of beer and dead cow and get it done. There is always auszookers if you get stuck.

I am aware that all conversions involve complexities and hard work.
I am, however, unable to weld. It seems that the G16 invloves this in one way or another. I'm sure I could get some help, but I was wondering about whether the G13BB would make a simpler conversion, and whether it would be worthwhile....
Zookfun, this is an offroad car, i wan't torque where I need it, not power where I need to rev the nuts off to get it...

I am sure somebody here could mod the oil pickup for you and post it over, that solves that part of it
I dont think Saam ever mentioned pickup or sump mods when he stuck his Jimny motor in though, so it might drop in
I also wonder if the G13BB pickup and sump fit a g16

As far as the sunp goes, is it just a question of bolt a G13 sump on a G16 block, or is there a little more to it?

Yes, sumps are a straight swap. Oil pickup for the G16 is bigger than the 13

if you want great reliable power, plenty of cheap available parts and some gearbox options down the track go the 16b.
if you want some more power, a horrible head design and problematic efi go the 13b.
if you want a little more power, an engine that falls apart, parts that are hard to obtain (the ones that break), and second hand engines that are few and far between go the 13bb.

Ok, I'm leaning towards the G16B.
Coil pack Baleno motor is the way to go, I gather?
Oil pickup mods would be an issue for me, but I'll figure that out.
Wiring I'm fairly confident with, but I might buy a pre-made loom if I can...
Any other common pitfalls that I need to watch for?

Coil pack Baleno motors are very nice, and have a low intake manifold so fit woth no bonnet mods / body lift.
Downsides are you will need to cut out the front section of the sump around the crank sensor and weld it into yout G13 sump, and you will need to fab up water lines to get the water from the rear of the head to the radiator.
A Vitara motor would be easier if you have limited fabrication capability. You will need a body lift, or will have to cut the ribs out of the bonnet and possibly shim up the front clip / bonnet stopers to get the bonnet to close.
The G13 and G16 sumps swap over easily (bar the mentioned crank sensor on the Baleno motor). The oil pickup has a different size end where it fits into the block on all G16's, and the mounting bracket goes to a different bearing cap. Its easy enough to cut and prep the two pickups, then take it to someone who can weld and have them zapped together.

not if you source an x90 sump, or very late model g16b. depending on your suspension setup. BenT wrote: and you will need to fab up water lines to get the water from the rear of the head to the radiator.
not if you source all the manifold etc from a jimny and bolt it straight on.

Ok, well I have 1" body lift, is that enough to clear the Vitara motor?
If so, that makes the Vitara the most attractive option?

the g13 sump also needs some modification to fit the g16 , its not a direct fit/straight swap over like others have said , it needs some massaging ..

they have said it needs some modifying above. The sump itself will bolt up,its just the pickup that gets the modding.
at the end of the day if you could pick up a cheap enough 13bb from a jimny with power steering and all then that would start to become more appealing.Bolt up power steer aswell while your at it,no gearbox adaptor plate etc but im sure they arent that easy to find
in saying that my old g16b and vit power steer is good enough for me

Could you go into a bit more depth here?
Do you have part numbers?

I also wonder if the G13BB pickup and sump fit a g16 The G13BB sump pan is the same to the carby G13; really short of the wiring they are bolt in Ben_Sierra wrote: Ok, well I have 1" body lift, is that enough to clear the Vitara motor?
Haven't used a Vitara motor myself, But you can also lower your motor slightly to achieve better clearance (check measurements for the axle hitting the sump of course though). My GV G16 has a taller rising plenum like the early Vit, but does not run the intake across the tappet cover, hence not quite as tall. I fitted it purely through lowering it, and modifying one little vacuum fitting on the manifold (not body lift, or moding bonnet).

yeah just lower the motor. I'm running G16 vit with the cross-over pipe with no sump mods and no body lift. Just RUF and lowered engine. It was a little more work but nothing bad comes from a lower COG
