looking at a couple of differant models, some auto some manual. What are the auto's like on day to day use and off road compaired to the manuals? around the 99-2001 models

any help would be good.

Personally... i dont like Auto's in any car, especially in a Zook, i like to change gears, and select the gear i want, when i want it... i just dont think it feels like a proper Zook with an Auto, lol
I have heard that the GV Auto, can overheat, if off-roading alot or working hard, they have an oil cooler that can be put on... but others will disagree, and actually love Auto's...

for many years i fiddled with manuals........then i changed to the electronic autos. now ALL my zooks are equiped with electronic autos (two vits, one an xl7 and a sierra) and i won't be going back. the gearing in them is great, i use 1st low 99% of the time going down hills and my brake lights are not on


don't waste time with a manual.


as far as overheating goes, i have never come across one that has (and i have dealt with heaps), and if it does i'd be getting the radiator cleaned out and install an external cooler. compared to an auto the manual gv, and mainly the xl7, is a horrid thing to drive.

the autos seem to chew more fuel than manuals probly feel more gutless, i have an auto 02 gv and uses 17l/100km's on average and feels gutless, everyone with manuals say they are pretty decent with power delivery, i've never driven a manual gv.

keep the coments coming more info the better. I thought the manuals are better suited to most things but dont mind autos on sand dunes due to smoother gears if need be halfway up one.

I find the shifting of the manual box to be stiff and notchy.

The gearbox can be a bitch to get out when it comes time for a clutch and you have to be careful of aftermarket replacements because some are shithouse (Read: Excedy Heavy Duty).

Pre '02 models can have problems with the transfer case, make sure you drive it for 5 or 10km's in 4wd to make sure it doesn't pop out of 4 Hi.

Early Auto GV's had the weaker aluminium front diff housing.

tell me about it, afterowning a v6 commodore that has a bigger engine and wieghs more, thought i was getting a better economy car but uses more fuel. spoke to heaps of people and it's the norm.

I don't mind as it is a 4x4 and can spend time with the family in the great out doors that u can't to in a sedan.

Expect the manual to average about 12L/100 on the highway.

Oh, and if you find a manual XL7 you are doing well, they are rare as rocking horse shit.

You'll probably pay about the same money for an early Xl7 as you will a late model GV

That is way to much ! I am guessing you have very blocked injectors, which is why it feels gutless...
I have an 2001 5 Door Manual GV, and if put my foot down, it almost snaps my bloody head off !
And mine uses no where near 17l/100kms, even if i am a bit foot heavy, lol... but i regularly put fuel treatment through to keep the fuel system and injectors clean, mine will take 60kms of driving before it even moves of full, and i have just driven 250kms Highway and urban, and its still not on half empty yet... oh, and i only fill up with premium unleaded, no standard unleaded shit for me and my zook...

I have the GV owners Manual in front of me, and it says for a 2.5L V6 5 Door Manual, it gets 13.5 L/100kms Urban, 8.3L/100kms Highway, and gets an average of 10.2L/100kms, and the Auto gets 14.8L/100kms Urban, 8.8L/100kms Highway, and an average of 11L/100kms... so the Manual is more economical !

the couple i have driven lock up the inside rear wheel and jump around when in 4H doing tight slow circles. I know most 4wd's have some sort of transmission lock up when this is done but is this the norn for these?? anyone tried it with theirs?

Like any 4wd they will get axle wind-up when doing tight turns on hard surfaces. It feels like the transmission is binding up because the front wheels are trying to turn faster than the rear wheels. It is probably more noticeable in a light car like a Suzuki.

I have a 99 GV manual. Has 150k on it and no real problems. Never had the gearbox jump out in 4wd low or high. Has heaps of power.

Would like to do a power to weight comparison with all STANDARD 4wd suzuki's, I think the early GV's will come up shining.

I bought mine with 199000kms on it, it now has 203000kms, and i have taken it 4WD-ing, and had no problem with jumping out in 4WD Low... the series 2 GV, the one with the chrome strip at the front of the bonnet, had alot of the previous series 1 problems rectified... and yes they do have heaps of Power !

Does anyone know the KW/NM rating for the H25A GV engine ?

114kw or something like that. it wieghs as much as a v6 commodore and has 50% less power. i love my GV but you can't say it has heaps of power.

yep mine was a manual. what you also have to do on the test drive is give them a little stick

my GV with big tyres still felt allot better than any customers GV i drove. a customer even had a low k engine put in his GV with extractors and it was slower than my baby.

from what stekky tells me the engines remember how they are driven.

the guy that bought my GV flew up from vic and drove it home, he was stunned by the pick up in it compared to any he drove in vic

all were stock.

cheers. the couple i have driven really needed a good rev but no probs with pick up while on the move. only driven one auto and was slugish.

I really disagree... mine has heaps of Power, if you are not prepared for it, it can take you by surprise... once the engine hits 3500rpm, it feels a bit like a Turbo boost, and just takes off !
I can keep up with, and beat a new V8 Rangie !

I did my first accidental tyre smoke up, pulling out of a T Junction a bit to fast, the tyres smoked up
I think they have plenty of power and torque !
