how strong are the standard tow/ snatch hooks that come on the vitara front and rear?

would it be wise to mount new hooks? problem with this tought is that there are no real ideal spots to screw them in.

can people please put up some pics of where and how they mounted their tow hooks if they have some handy.

ive been snatched off them a few times hate doing it but they havnt broken yet but after looking at the front one ill be looking into something before going somewhere im gunna need to be pulled

im looking at making a front bar with some mounts for snatching and ill props run a equaliser strap aswell

on the rear ive used my towbar once or twice which has worked ok

think when i get around to a rear bar ill do the same as the front

The standard ones are tie down points only, they are not ment to be used in a recovery situation. The main danger is that they could rip off and become a projectile. Same go's for any other car.

And of course you should NEVER use the towball as a point of recovery. There have been a few people that have died because it has let go. Just do a couple of youtube search's and you'll know what I mean. You should remove the towball and use a shackle through the towball hole.

I've got my rated tow hook bolted through the lower part of the bullbar, which is obviously mounted to the chassis.

Recoveries should not be done half arsed. Do it properly, Do it safely.

my thoughts for the front were to make a plate and attach it to the bullbar mounts. the bullbar mounts are attached to the chasis. the tow hook will be mounted to the plate. the idea of the plate is so that it can sit a bit lower than the bullbar to clear room so a tow hook can be used there.


the rear is harder, i have a tow bar and rear alloy protector bar in the way and both using valuable chasis mounting space.

Can you sandwich a plate between the chassis and the towbar mounting plate?

they are all ive ever used for recovery, and have been snatched off the front one pretty hard a few times. I'm not sayin they ideal, but ive never had a problem

Propably could yeah I've just done the old ditch the ball usally in the past and it's holding up so far and that includes a pretty big snatch. I could hop outta my car and look but that would mean hoping out into the cold. I love tradies

for the rear i might have a solution. is it safe to grind off the old snatch hook at its in the way. the fuel tank is right there is i dont like the sparks being right there. i will ask same question elsewhere as many might not read this.

Im running a full size alloy bullbar on my Vit and the plates it is attached to chassis with are alloy as well (about 8-10mm), is an alloy bar or the plates strong enough to mount a couple of those aftermarket tow hooks to or will it just twist and tear the alloy ???

thats what i was thinking also as i have the same going on. my mounting plates of the alloy bar are 10mm so quite thick, hopefully thats enough. can someone who has done this please setup let us know how it goes?
