Hi, I have a 1984 sierra 1.0 litre. I am thinking of doing a motor upgrade and was just wondering if anyone can tell me if a 1.6 litre vitara motor would fit without much trouble and would it fit under the bonnet?

Thanks for any help guys i'm only new to this site so go easy on me.lol.

yes it will fit. pretty sure engine mounts and gearbox mount need changing but it's all been done before so there should be enough info to know what your getting yourself into before you start.

best option would be the 1.6 EFI if you can afford one. but obviously a lot more work.
a 1.6 carby would be next choice.
don't bother with a 1.3, not worth the effort in my opinion.
But first choice would be stick with the mighty 1 litre, with the right gearing the little motors will take you anywhere off road and still sit on 90 with ease on the highway, 100 if you want to push it. don't worry about cars passing you, it's a zook thing.

The engine will not fit if you mount it at the same height your current motor is.

Given that yours is a 1 litre, you will have to cut and move the engine mounts on the chassis rails anyway. But to fit the taller 1600 without a body lift or bonnet swap, you will need to fabricate new mounts that sit the engine down lower.

I have a G16 EFI in my 1L ute. I lowered the motor as far as I could without causing issues with sump clearance and gearbox output angles, and I still needed an extra 15mm clearance at the bonnet. This meant that I had to cut some bracing from under my bonnet, or fit a 1.3L bonnet with the hump. The 1.3 bonnet was less work.

This conversion is definately worth the effort in my opinion.

Do the 1.3 conversion, then buy the 1.6 kit - you'll need it for the gearbox adapter anyway.

I'll get some pics for you. But can you fabricate your own mounts?

no worries. You will notice that I have used VL commonwhore mounts. These are heaps stronger, and pretty cheap to buy. :D
