Right so this makes sense in my head but needs some technical clarification - I've got the later model pinion mount for the GV steel diff swap and apparently there are some sump clearance issues (may not be right, but that's my understanding). I remember reading that some sierras with 1.6's have swapped the sump from the 1.3 for the same reason, could this be done in the vitara or are there compatability issues with pickups/other bottom end stuff I don't know about? Would diff-drop brackets have the same effect while being simpler? Or maybe a BFH to the existing sump?

I haven't started on the swap yet but I want to get the clearest picture I can before giving it a go.

I'm in the same boat mate, I pick my steel diff up on Tuesday. I had a quick look at my current sump and being a V6 originally it has about 1/2 inch of clearance from the pionion mount already, but as you state the different pinion mount on the later model could be the issue.

When I get the diff I am going to try and measure both pinion mounts and see what the difference is. If it's too much to whack I am considering getting a second sump and doing a cut and shut of about 1" off the corner that would rub, but like you I don't know if this will cause any other problems inside the sump .....

The older one is the flat plate with the mounting bolt going down into it, the newer one is the triangular bracket with the bush for the bolt to go through horizontally.

Yep, I've got the triangular one (late '98 GV on) and I hear it can foul on the sump. Have you found a way around this yet DH or is it still a work in progress?

there might be enough room to fit the later mounts on the 1.6 as the crossmember has droop than the 2.0

The guys at the suzistore have tried and it still doesn't have enuff clearance on the 1.6 vits

Hehe. Nup, haven't even looked at it yet. Was hoping it would squeeze in, but otherwise probably take a hammer to the sump if not.

I'm now having ideas about blowing the tax return on an air locker, stub axel and lux CVs at the same time the steely goes in...

Just picked up my GV steelie and thank f@#k it has the flat plate one, the same as I have on my alloy diff now

Sorry mate, i can't figure it out ... just got lucky I guess.

I was once told that suzuki mix n match a lot of stuff for different Vits, like when I got my Vit I looked at another one the same build month/year LWB except it had auto hubs, abs and 1 air bag, where as mine had no abs, manual hubs and no air bags.

Maybe that's what happened here becuase it is exactly the same as the mount for my alloy housing

Yeah those changes just come with updates they make to the models. There has to be a point where an old style is replaced so 2 made in the same month will have different designs - just happens to be that month they swapped over. Unfortunately that happened mid-1998 with the GV diff pinion mount, someone must have decided it needed to be improved so they changed it, thankfully for those lucky enough to find the early 98 ones they can slot straight in. Just the way it goes I guess.
