Hi.
I am looking at butting a 1.6 liter 1996 vitara hard top and I am wondering what the automatic transmissions are like and how well do they handle bigger tyres?
The auto would also allow regearing to 5.125 diff gears?
This one seems to clean to pass up
Hope u can help

the autos are awesome (it should be 4 speed electronic) but you will find it allready has 5.1 gears.

Awesome. I'm only planning to go up to 235 75 15's so it's not a huge gearig difference easier to let the box to decide what gear to be in.
Would that size tyre still be ok cruising at highway speeds etc.
Are there any problems with them or if not driven too hard indestructible.?

Gearing is ok on road up to about a 31 IMHO. Above that it will be a bit of a pain. The gearbox is very strong and should give you no trouble.

thanks a heap for all you info i really appreciate. Going to look at the car tomorrow and if it is as clean as the owner described i think ill buy it. i was looking for a manual but this auto seems very good. the only real advantage with a manual would have been engine braking.

cheers

Thanks. Going to look at it tomorrow it sounds like a really clean car low kms, lady owner for the past 8 yrs, always garaged, service history. I'm sold on the auto now :P
It's a limited edition vitara so it has all the extra accessories it even has airbags which I thought was rare.
I'm only looking at doing tame mods like the ome lift kit and a set of 235/75/15s on steelies so should go alright.
Thanks
