Looking at a few different diff breather options....

firstly, for the filter I could use fish tank air stones or the normal fuel filters

Something a little different is the bellows airtight design that doesnt need filters. Not sure about robustness, but then again, hoses can be torn apart by rocks too...

The last idea, was that i'm getting a custom snorkel made (sierra snorkels are on the drivers side, 1.6L EFI engine intakes are on the left) and am looking at running two air filters (one inside the engine bay, one at the top of the snorkel) so i could just get some barbs built into that, and just have some line joining the two together.

Ideas? Thoughts? Questions? downsides?

diffs dont inhale like an engine they will be fine with whatever you put on the end (if anything)

Diff breather, just use one of those $2 fuel filters

For the snorkel you can buy a pre filter that either sits on the outside of the head or one down the throat like a sock.

I don't run any filters on the end of my diff breather lines. They just sit up in the engine bay out of the way.

I know the diffs don't need air, they just need to equalise pressures when expanding/contracting from temperature changes.

I'm looking at filters to stop mud and crap blocking the holes. I like the idea of plumbing it into the snorkel as it would look neater, be stronger and having a pre-cleaner on the end of the snorkel would ensure that the air supply is always clean and the hoses will never get clogged.

the hose is 1/2"

there is some thought that breathers behind a filter may get to a situation where the filter is clogged and there is a vacuum at teh take off point that may have the engine trying to breathe through the diffs which could lead to crap being sucked past the seals

Sorry, i meant to say "pre-cleaner" at the top of the snorkel, I'll be running a 89 injected diahatsu charade filter under the bonnet. (that specific filter box is the perfect shape - which is why i chose it at the wreckers)

A pre-cleaner should never "clog up" and so there should always be plenty of clean air that the diffs can use.
