Because the week wouldn't be complete without multiple tyre threads... lol

I'm considering running 2 sets of rubber - summer and winter, and as such want some feedback on rock tyres...

Terrain here in summer is dried clay with pebbles in it and on it (like shale almost - very slippy), compacted dried clay, loose rocks and granite.

Whats ya thoughts on a suitable 31x10.5 tyre?

i have heard great things about treps... pitty they dont do the comp spec style in 31's

personally, i would go for a very flat faced tread pattern with nice deep grooves, something like the trepadors, baja claw, old wrangler MTR and the like.

i would steer clear of the simex's, and bogger style tread patterns.

yeah i'm sticking with simex ET for winter tyres =)

i would have thought the trep pattern would be prone to bad lateral traction being kind of a bar tread? (same issue the simex suffer).

I've got no idea with whats good on rocks though... who'd compared a MTR to a Trep in real life? theyre pretty chalk and cheese looks wise.

i have used both treps and MTRs..(i was running the old style MTR) . be it they were on different cars and were different sizes.. treps were 31s and the MTRs were 35s

both were really good on rocks. . my personal choice would be the treps as the sidewall isnt as thick and bags down quite well. although i have heard great things about the new kevlar MTRs

The General Grabber tyre is getting used on KOH trucks in the states & a few of the Outback Challenge/Cliffhanger trucks are getting around on them.

No kidding. I do not like the look of the tread, it does not look like it would disperse water at all, more like it would love to aquaplane, no escape.

I think you'd be surprised SuziBlu. I didn't rate 35X13.5" Krawlers on a Sierra either but they're stunning.

They're brand new though so I don't know what the compound is like, bu tI reckon they'd a good summer tyre.

Load range C though so they should bag.

Unless you are paddling mud when you are going slow I reckon tread pattern counts for bugger all in performance and its all in the rubber compound, you should see how my rock climbing shoes stick to rock and they are slicks

Pro comp tyres? Seen a few down here at work and they look alright, and everyone who's truck we've worked on who was running them rated them highly.

Personally have no clue though.

Yeh as you mentioned, steer clear of Simex Extremes on shale, they are the worst tyre i have ever used on shale and smooth rock.

sent an email to general tires australia asking if theyre bringing in the 'new grabber' and what the rrp is...

anyone else got suggestions? So many of you guys drive rocks i'd thought i'd be overwhelmed =) haha

KM2 is too nobbly on rocks i reckon (seen them in action) - but still better than the simexs... lol

Underground mining vehicles that work in harshest conditions use a slick tyre as this grips the best to rock and doesn't chip itself away.

Get a tyre that has a high anti chip compound and it will be great on rocks but on bitumen it will wear away quickly. That is the nature of the beast. You cannot have both

Thats why coopers used to peel huge chunks of them and fall to pieces.

I would go a AT like a BFG for more off road work or bridgestone d694 for a more comfortable tyre on the road but still excellent offraod

1st place MTZ, Good on road, passable in mud, pretty good on rocks, good in dirt,

2nd place Pro Comp X terrain, Ok on the road, passable in light mud, OK on rocks, Ok on Dirt.

My mate found federal couragia MT's pretty good on rocks, they wre 33's and on a 80 series but they always had grip and hardly slipped at all.

The pro comp range looks the goods though. One of my bosses runs the xtreme AT on his daily, the other boss (who is his brother) runs the regular AT and they both look like a great tyre and they've both had a lot to say about them.
A few customers cars we've done ran the pro comp mud terrian which resembled a maxxis buckshot with a bit of side tread, but less then a maxxis bighorn.

I had procomp Xterrains on my sierra and i reckon they are a good all round tyre
I thought they were alright on price too, i paid $330 each for 33x12.5
