Hi Everyone,
I stumbled across this ute when I looking for Sierra bits on trademe.co.nz:
trademe
It's a sierra ute with a Toyota 1n-T 1453cc turbo diesel in it. Not sure what gearbox it's running, but it's a standard transfer case apparently.
I'm going to try and contact the seller as I want to know what gearbox he's using. I've done some research previously and the motor is only about 40kg more than a Sierra motor, so the difference isn't too bad. You could move the battery to under the tray and you're half way there.
Here are the specs:
Max BHP (approximately): 67@4700BHP (50kW)
Max Torque (approximately): 96@2600 (130Nm)
versus a standard Sierra motor:
Power 49.5Kw @ 6000 rpm
Torque 102Nm @ 4000 rpm
They obviously don't rev as high as a sierra, but they redline at around 6000rpm which is decent for an older style diesel.
Unfortunately I don't think these engines were never brought into Australia, so I don't think you could get one complianced. But it sounds like a great idea for you diesel Sierra fans...
Any thoughts? Anyone want to get one with me?

Seems a lot of effort for really no gain?

Its got a dually rear axle!!!!
Yes they fucked the car by putting a heavy diesel with almost the same power as the petrol motor it originally had, but it looks like it was built to carry heavy shit, so it would be WAY better for that than it was with a 1.3 and standard rear axle.

Yeah definately for that purpose!
It's only 40kg more. I wouldn't feel comfortable towing much with it though, it's still only a 1 ton ute!
With that said, from what I've seen all the zook drivers tackle obstacles with very generous amounts of right foot >.>

Looks like a good platform for some redneck to build a BNS ute.
It's different.

i dont think it would be worth it at all, not much gain and when you have a small 4wd revs can be your best friend.

looking at the power & torque figures... it doesn't look any better than the 1.6 vitara motor?

A winch is 30kg.. 40kg is a whoopdy doo..
I like the bubby turbo. Looks cute.

I love the idea of a small turbo diesel in a sierra. I know a lot of zook owners like to rev, but I love my diesels. And a turbo diesel would be even better.
I know it seems like a lot of effort for little gain (30% torque), but you also get the increased economy and the ability to run on biodiesel or wvo (waste vegetable oil).
What are the figures for a G16B motor?
There are no small/light turbo diesel 4wd utes on the market (that I know of or can afford at least). Suzuki could corner the market, even if it's a very small market.
I didn't notice the rear wheels on that particular ute - hillarious. Must be to reduce the damage to the padock in the wet - that's the only reason I can think of apart from trying to be very different.
Neat looking conversion, too.

As mentioned by others, the Toyota Caldina conversion might seem like just another way to get the same weight, power and torque numbers as from a G16A conversion, but NZ has special reason why a Diesel might seem more attractive, fuel costs.
Unleaded Petrol is about NZ$1.77/Lt ($1.41AU), while Diesel is NZ$1.18/lt ($0.94AU). Diesel powered vehicles do also have to pay additional Road User Charges on top of Rego, but this is only $28/1000km (this is the "5000k's RUC" paid up mentioned in the ad). At nearly AU 50c/lt difference in fuel costs, if you had a rooted engine that needed rebuilding a diesel conversion would pay for itself fairly quickly. This price difference in fuels is not so apparent here in Aus, so the incentive is not as good.
Take into account too that a lot of their off-road driving involves crossing and re-crossing braided rivers, and a snorkelled diesel looks very attractive.

peak torque at 2600 instead of 4000 sounds good to me. I'll still stick with the g16 though.

The registered GVM for this particular Suzi is 3,064Kg!!!! So on a Ute that weighs 970Kg, plus 40Kg for the Diesel engine, that means this can legally carry a load of 2054Kg. That's nearly a whole weekend's worth of beer.

I don't believe you. Even the brand new BMW 123D engine ( 16 valve DOHC twin turbo pushing 40psi+ of boost) can't spin above 5500rpm. I bet 4400rpm, maybe 5000rpm governor, but by that point the turbo will be well out of flow and the car's throttle response will be so doughy there will be no point revving the car that hard.
Whilst I agree it's a neat conversion, it doesn't make enough power or torque to make it worthwhile.
I wonder if it melts heads like most other indirect injection old school toyota diesels?
Steve.
