What coils/struts you using in the front, what are you doing for castor correction and how
much flex do you get?

i have 4 inch lifted lovells jimney coils in with rancho rs9000 in rear shocks and in front i have 40mm extened ultima shock but to get more travel i cut the front strut towers down about 65mm an welded a plate on top to lower the shoch so i get more travel,i have only just finished it but waiting for front adjustable pan hard rod to adjust the alighenment of my wheels

How does this increase wheel travel?

well because u cant get any longer front shock struts for the front other than 40mm ,where the top of the shock mounts on in up high under your wheel arch,by cutting the tower down and remounting the shock loxwe and putting longer coils on that will give u the travel

Er, I think you have moved the top mount down. By my guess, your struts have about 7.5" of travel maximum. How have you added travel by moving the top mount down? I think your strut still has 7.5" of travel regardless of where the top mount is.

Steve.

yea i moved the mount down allowing the shock to have more travel as well as putting 40mm extened shock in so i have now have about 105mm more traveling on the front shock compared to standard i would put pics up but it wont let me

Moving the shock down won't give it any more travel. It will give you some lift though.

Even by now you have to have the idea that you are having a conversation to bait him or your powers of understanding really are bad

He has effectively done teh same as a strut top flip on a vitara, IE as designed at full suspension up travel the shock isnt close to being compressed, so drop the top mount down so the travel that wasnt being used can now work as more droop

Sounds like a good idea, I am surprised nobody has thought of it before

Dobinsons apparently do an 80mm strut now. I would also like to see pics of how you have done this mate.

X2 on Rusho
Dobinsons do an 80mm lifted strut, cost around $300 a pair mates rates from Suspension Stuff
And the coils are only 190 a pair. Far easier to do that than all the other crap.

back on the topic of caster??

that is going to be a bitch to drive with polly busshes up front and 3' or what ever u get from caster busshes..

pics?

i am with every one ence.. u will get no more flex, just more hight.. it is never the shocks that stop mine flexing in the front, its the busshes in the arms..

why do u want a coily SO tall for anyways?

zookimonsta, do you have a link to those Dobinson struts? I was searching through their website but couldn't seem to find them :? . any recommendations as to whether these are worth it over the 2inch ebay kit?

Nah mate, they aren't an off-the-shelf item. Only made when they get an order.
Have a chat to Shane at Suspension Stuff.

you wont get more travel from moving the shock but you will be able to use more of the travel from shock its just like the strut top flip in the vitara. which ive done.

I like to pretend that mine has things such as this done to it. I also like to imagine it's also a great oppurtunity to make the tower stronger in the process.

But truthfully, it's all just a figment of my imagination. Until Gwagonsteve actually thinks of it, then it's not actually possible to do, i mean he did look under a coily once.

hehehe if only I'd "just laid under a coily once" , I've spent sooo much time working on a coil sierra, pulling it apart, comparing knuckles, axles and CV's, welding up radius arm mounts, swapping in a leaf transfer, building barwork, rolling the front diff for caster, fitting a BL, shimming bumpstops.... and a bunch of other stuff. After all this we realised we'd hit the wall with the coiler- at 31's and transfer gears and about 2" of suspension (custom fabricated and valved Koni's) we weren't going to take the car further without throwing all of the terribly compromised suspension away.

Lowering the top shock mount will compensate the effect of lowering bumpstops or excessively stiff springs that will not prevent full compression the original post claimed that lowering the top shock mount "added travel" and that's false- its just a crude fix for other issues in the suspension.

I agree if the bumpstops have been lowered, say 2" then it might be fair to lower the top mount 2" to compensate, but the real "fix" would be to fit a 2" longer front shock and net 4" more travel, like everyone with a leaf sierra does. Nobody lowers top shock mounts in a sierra because it's a silly idea. It's being done here because of the dumb strut design of the coiler.

I'd really like to see some coilers built that push the envelope but mostly they run the same formula that results in poor travel and broken mounts. Sams (?) with the jimny front coil buckets was an awesome idea that eliminated the junk front struts but stuck with the radius arm design so while travel improved articulation really didn't. Why hasn't anyone built a three or five link within the stock coiler architecture? Why hasn't anyone lengthened (or run longer) radius arms? Why hasn't anyone slipped the arms up beside the chassis rather than the rock anchor mounts under the stock chassis?

It generally seems that coil owners won't experiment as much as leaf owners. There might be some good reasons for that -Paul and I decided that all the re-engineering work required to fix his wasn't worth it), but in general coil sierra development hasn't moved far beyond springs and shocks where as for leaf owners it's quite a bit more advanced. Trojan- THAT's why I get frustrated with coil suspension threads.

No you don't. You're so negative towards anything any body suggests in regards to a SJ80, even this thread alone a modification which does work is being told it doesn't by you. Even though you clearly havn't done it.

That's your opinion Trojan and you are more entitled to it. In my opinion, I'm not negative towards what people suggest about coilers, I'm negative towards coilers because they are such a PITA to modify.

It's already been posted in this thread that 80mm longer than stock struts are available for coilers. That being the case, why would anyone want to lower the top mount? It just doesn't make any sense.

The car I spent all that time on did have small bumpstop spacers so theoretically we could have cut the towers down 20mm and gained 20mm of droop, but it didn't really seem worth it. Interestingly, the stock shock tower broke and punched the shock out the top of the tower, which I put down to stiffer than stock valving in the Konis this car ran. Just one more thing coilers break. We were able to repair it successfully because the car had a body lift in it. If it hadn't, the front clip would have had to come off to weld it up.

Hey Zookimonsta, know of any zooks on AZ running this setup? I was thinking of putting a bodylift in but I'd rather that extra flex! I guess you'd need lower radius arms in the front and probably 6mm brackets from the diff to the arms ''instead of the shitty 3mm ones stocko'' maybe this setup is the way to go for me.

Lockie, a body lift and 80mm struts answer different questions.

It's not clear if the 80mm struts are actually 80mm longer than stock, or are (lets say) 40mm longer than stock, and have their spring platform welded on 40mm higher up the strut (possible?)

IF it's option A, you'll need to space the bumpstop down around 40mm to prevent the strut bottoming before the axle reaches the bumpstop. This would allow you to run the same size tyre as you could with a 2"BL or so (without the BL)

If it's option 2, you would still need a BL as the axle could still reach the stock bumpstop location.

Hope that makes sense.

when a car as problematic suspension geometry and isn't conducive to lift, there is a place for a body lift (or heavily cut guards) Even dealing with caster with 80mm of lift will be difficult.

I'm intrigued about these "80mm" struts. The clearances inside the coil mount/shock tower are pretty tight, and with the Koni shocked car I was involved with, the model of koni that could be used was limited by the small diameter required to clear the shock tower.

I'd be concerned that at full droop with an 80mm longer strut would be tight on the coil mount as the axle pulls back.

Just some thoughts. Hope this isn't too negative for anyone

just some info regarding said "80mm lifted struts", spoke to a bloke from dobinsons today...
maybe and quite possibly he is full of shit but he had no idea about a strut like that being produced.
his answer to my dilema was a rav 4 rear and welding the bottom spring mount to the shock and extending it down with tube to the mount on the diff!

A rav 4 rear might well be a feasible solution.

Coil front shocks aren't really a "strut" (as in McPherson strut) as a real strut is a suspension member that controls steering axis and camber and might also be a coil carrier. (A Vitara front uses a McPherson strut with no coil carrier)

As a result a modified McPherson strut would be ideal as they are very durable - they're built for much higher side loads than regular shocks
