Do it, the motor has parts all over Australia, so will be cheapish. If you can get the bonnet to close like it did before, that would be awesome, heck if your going to go this far with all the mods then why not talk with an engineer so you can drive it around. Personally, it would be just fun to drive around, hooning it everywhere, a little pointless tho.
If i had a VN commo and a vit with a blown motor, i would keep the dore as a DD and gradually teach your son maintenance on how to rebuild a motor. That will be a tool for life.
but if you do do it, build thread

Well it was a sierra, but it was not a complete success by any stretch of the imagination. It wheeled what any sierra on 36's with lockers and coilovers and a 1.6L would wheel. Only difference is that the 1.6L version would have been able to travel at highway speeds ( assuming the tyres were radial and balanced) whereas the massive "thong slapper" over the front end did nothing but ruin the handling of the vehicle at speed.
Its a bullshit, archaic engine, with fuck all HP/Litre, and does not belong in a small 4WD.

just a question, did you move the front diff forward and if so how much?
i think do it! there is a reason why lots of buggy guys, lux guys and some rover guys are using these engines and its not because the are cheap.

Goodluck mate. The v6s are so much of a wank factor. Really not much gain over the 1.6 when you think about what else has to be changed.
We have a chopped sierra at work with a v6...but apart from the chassis and half cab, nothing else is suzi.
Goodluck with it though mate, in my opinion your better off rebuilding the 1.6 or going to a better weighted engine

Thats a great idea!! Heaps less weight, more power and torque, and WAY smoother running. Very reliable aswell. And only 200cc larger.
Rear mounted radiator would be a must though.

they are everywhere because 90% of P plates in Aussie own a shitbox
commodore and wrap it around a tree/pole/another car. then they buy a 4WD
because they think they are cool but because they are dickhead ricers they
thrash them until they blow the motor up. then they try to join the 2 together.

just a thought but isnt 3 speed vit auto a trimatic? isnt a commodore auto a trimatic? shure the blokes on here who seem to know everything will disagree but id try and find out, swap bell housings? bolt together? would be a massive job building a car like this but it would be awsome. just do everything properly overwise itl be a sack of poo. build it take lots of pics and post them on here! good luck.
ps- when did sense or practical matter?

Commodore V6 autos are T700R4's (which is a great auto)
Holden 6's (202 etc) and 253 V8's used Trimatics.
AFAIK you can't put a Trimatic behind a buick V6, and then why would you want to? The T700R4 is an awesome auto and can be adapted to any transfer case you'd care to use. A trimatic can be adapted to precisely one transfer - the vitara one. A vitara transfer is a terrible idea for a build like this.
RB30 engined VL's used Jatco autos. Not sure what auto the V8 VL's ran.
I can see no problem with building a powerful Vitara, but the buick 3800 isn't powerful, refined, or well designed.
Just because something is free or cheap doesn't make it a good idea.
Steve.

ok bad idea then! and id definitely agree about the power thing coz my 1600 vit is easily the most powerful vehicle ever built by man, so putting a humping great v6 in it would definitely make it slower and produce a tiny amount of torque.

Consider a few things please before you pick up a spanner
How will the alloy front diff handle the extra torque/power???
How will the IFS handle the extra weight???
By the time you finish it will be a cut down vitara body with a custom chassis.
maybe find a real cheap hilux as well and combine all three
VN motor and auto, hilux transfer, chassis and diffs and vitara cab.
That would work and look good to. Would be 100 times easier to manage too.

Putting a commodore V6/T700R4+Transfer into a vitara is a pretty complex way of getting 130Kw though.
And the 300Nm is going to wreak havoc on the rest of the driveline.

Turbo 350 or 400 I think. Were definitely still 3 speed.

torque and reliability and fuel consumption. they are all pretty good for a old engine.
if i was you i'd be looking at using some lux diffs as well

Well its not. And it will cost you alot to get it up and running. The adapter to the lux transfer is $1K alone.
