i got bogged tonight towing my boat up a beach and to get out i started dumping the clutch
at 5000rpm in 3rd low and it got me thinking about broken trans cases. i have
no case reinforcing and standard mounts and have been flogging my trans case
for a bit over 2 years and have only broken 2 mounts. you would think that
dumping the clutch with 1600kg attached to the back of the car would show
up any weakness so i am starting to think that the cases that have broken
were maybe caused by gear wind up. does that make any sense? has anyone had a case fail on a lowish traction surface?

Power is another contributing factor.

Just to make this thread useful down the track, can someone explane gear wind up and what causes it please.

I think a lot of the complaints about broken mounts has to do with inferior aftermarket mounts. The factory Suzuki ones seem to be much stronger.

Yeah that could be true.

But I used genuine mounts in my maruti, with 6.5 gears, and 36's, and I still blew mounts quite easily.

I guess there would be alot of contributing factors like driving style, type of terrain, type and size of tyres etc. So putting it down to only one thing; like wind-up; may be only half the story. :?

Ive never blown a mount since swapping to aftermarket solid mounts, before that I did 5 or 6 new stockers

You are running fairly large treads on your rig tho. All I'm saying is when I just got my rig on the road with the 4.9's and 30's I let the 1.6 just idle up a descent hill (minimal throttle input, max 1k rpm) and bang the brand new aftermarket mount burst (single side). The rubber just separated from the metal. Replaced this for a s/hand genuine mount then went out on a few other trips and broke the other two aftermarket mounts!! Same issue, rubber separating from the metal. The old single genuine one is still holding in fine tho.

I'm going to make something up to strengthen it all just as a precaution, not going to give it the chance to break

Any thing wrong with using the body lift blocks like a fellow from here sells in kits?. I made some myself out of body lift stuff. Whats the reason behind continually replacing the rubber ones with more rubber?

i kept rubber as i wanted the bit that busts to be cheap. i haven't heard of
any cases failing with standard mounts.

Cool, that's what i figured out thinking about it some more. Do you want a torn mount and fix that off road or a .. torn something else :). Preferably neither please.

Cheers.

i drove with 6.5s for a year on 31s and rear locker, standard mounts and never broke a mount then added a roctoy ring and some gussets to help with any breakages.
another year on and now with twin lockers ive still never broken a mount and drive mostly rocky terrain, hate mud.
They looked suss when i bought the zook but i dont abuse my car

Rather replace a mount out there than a cracked case....

strange though Ive towed several suzukis out of tracks with blown stock mounts to some where they could replace the mount or bodge something togther but never had to recover a zook with solid mounts and a blown case yet. I guess there is always a first time.

My take is that stock factory mounts will stretch forever (so far the case will heit the floor, even with a 2" BL (really!) and the stock arms will eventually bend.

Cheap aftermarket (chinese) mounts will break.

Long side arms will bend with transfer gears.

Beef stock arms and mounts and the risk is the case could break at the mounting locations.

PS 1.0 transfer mounts are better than 1.3. they run 4 mounts rather than three and the case is more resistant to twisting as a result.

I've run stock, 1.0 arms with no reinforcing with urethane mounts in my car and they've never bent with 6.5 gears and plenty of hate.

You want something to give. You don't want it to be the case.

Steve.
