Hi all, it's time for new tyres and I cant decide between a set of bfgoodies at's or a set or mickey thompson atz. I'm getting for the same price through work so price realy isn't the issue (there paying for fitt and balance).

Just really wanna know what you lot out there think which brand is a better tyreboth on and off-road.

Or if there is a better tyre out there, let me know

Cheers :D

You are going to need to tell us what sort of driving you do... Ie. Dirt, sand, mud, on-road etc.

Both tyres are good on their own merrits.

my advice would be the atz 4 ribs. alot better tire in all conditions plus last longer and not as noisy.

I ran the atz 4 ribs on a patrol ,great tyre in sand, mud, road and not so sharp rock however they are very square and tended to tear on the outer edges, this was mainly due to shit wheel alinglemnt feathering the tyre and then rotating so they wore the other way weaking the outer block. This patrol also had many extras making it a shit load heavier then starndard.
I reckon they'd be fine on a sierra but dont recommend on alot of rock surfaces due to the tear tendency.
I personally dont like bfg allterrains, due to peoples experiences with them espically on wet road. Their km2's however are different story. In saying this i have a mate who runs them on his hilux and swears by them, have lasted a very long time on his truck

I dont like BFG AT's either, they have a low speed rating, and are bad onroad, especially in the wet... as for KM2's, they are supposed to be 33% stronger now... so they may be ok... one thing i will say about getting AT's, try an get a LT ( Light Truck ) construction tyre, they have more plies and are srtonger...

I just got, they are new in Australia, Maxxis 771 AT's in a LT, and i tested them out on rocks, gravel and mud last weekend, and apart from some sidewall scuffing, they did bloody good, on wet roads they are great, and have a speed rating of 180kph, so i am happy with my choice ! :D

i rate maxxis bighorn and buckshot better offroad and cheaper than those listed above, onroad manners are lacking a little though.

getting back on topic, between the two you have said... i run the BFG A/T tyres on my sierra, and i swear by them... as mentioned they are absolutely pathetic on wet tarmac (which in a way is a good thing   ) but they are unbeatable on gravel roads. for an all terrain pattern they are quite good in mud, only time ive ever been stuck in mud is when im caught on the diffs, so not due to lack of grip. on sand they go alright, theyre not too aggressive that they want to dig, but they dont float as well as highway tread, or less aggressive A/T patterns.

i dont know what mickey thompsons are like, but go the BFG's if you do mostly gravel and dirt roads, wet or dry. if you like lots of traction on wet tarmac, steer far clear of them. i mean this almost literally: they have more grip on gravel than they do on road when its raining...

these are good for on road and sand. thats it. i give them a 2/10 in the mud...

unless you drive your car hard, you wouldnt notice the grip issues in a bfg on wet roads. driving sensible, its more than enough, and plenty safe...

I've run good year wranglers (old model), boggers, claws, bridgstone dueler and bighorn's. ranging from 235/75s to 33X14.5.

they all performed differently, teh boggers in 2wd put out more traction in mud then my wranglers in 4wd, but slid sideways on rock, and never bagged. The claws are good for a straight line on all surfaces, but slide sideways very easily. The bridgestone duelers did amazing things on dry rock, softish side wall, nice big contact patch, but spun like all buggery on mud. the wrangles and the bighorn's are much the same as each other. both have a mud terrain type pattern, but soft walls so they bag out on rocks, but never come off the rims. The only difference i can pick between the two of them is that the bighorns stick better on the wet road.

bighorn's cost me $900 for 5 of them, and i wish i had just bought them first.

so are bias super swampers, but they suck big time on the black top
dot approval means shit so if your buying on that alone your in for a big letdown or an accident/courtcase

personally I think running anthing more extreme than a radial mud tyre on a daily is notning short of basic neglegence and stupidity

oh by the way alien they should be ok as they are radials not bais

did you read the link? theyre designed for highway use. Plenty of reviews online stating the same. also, 'sucking big time' is subjective... if someone else hopped into my zuk running the simexs theyd say they sucked on the road, but im used to them and theyre fine.

Bridgestone 693 or any other japanese made tyre.

great tyre and really well designed. Japanese tyres are far superior to all the american made tyres in on road driveabilty.

I have fitted and driven on every tyre under the sun to vehicles and the japanese made tyres where by far the most superior for on road driving

I have also had BFG, Sumitumo, bridgestone, yokohama, hankook, simex, retreads, and many others on my $WD vehicles over the years and the bridgestone 693 was by far the best tyre I had for general off road driving COMBINED with on driveability.

NEVER EVER BUY AUSTRALIAN MADE . Poor design and build quality.

Just spend a few extra bucks and get a good tyre.

X2 BGF all terrains are the scariest tyre Ive ever driven on wet roads. They straight up suck on it, do yourself a big favor and forget them.
and no I'm not a bfg hater I run km2's on my work car they are great.

I'll agree with this, surprisingly good tyre that would hold on well enough for most things that wont scare the average weekender, face it most people will find a way round before pushing harder than their tyres and the people wheeling the hard stuff will do it with any tyre anyway :)

If I hadnt seen how well those general Grabbers stick on dirt i'd laugh at that website, htf is red lettering a feature?

Im running Mickey Thompson ATZ 5 rib and they perform very well as an on road during the week and exploring off road on weekend tire.

They have better wet weather grip than my previous set of cooper st's.

The only slight knock i can see is they appear to be quite a hard rubber compound and tend to "chip" a bit when used off road not a huge issue so far and the same compound probably accounts for their great mileage.

As a side note i know a few people running BFG at's and swear by them particularly in regards to their longevity as they can really rack up the K's if looked after.

...i think it comes down to how its driven. i used to say it was dangerous to drive, but mine were quite bald. i bought 2 new ones and had the rear brakes replaced, and now i think they hold up pretty well. i dont imagine too much worse than other all terrains or mud terrains

I think the BFG AT's are shit, in my experience they are an overated tyre, BFG make good MT's but the AT's are crap. Mickey Thompson tyres seem to be the flavour of the month at the moment, everyone seems to have them. I personally like the Cooper ATR's, I have had them on three different vehicles and I am always impressed at how well they handle a variety of conditions. Any tyre you choose will be a compromise of some sort but for everyday driving with a combination of mild off road then I would suggest Cooper ATR's, they handle gravel well and perform well on bitumen.
Cheers Matt
