ok i just got my car back yesturday from getting a new engine and heaps of work done near 2 grand later i drive it home and to work then home from work, to now find that my front passenger wheel has something wrong with it. i can pull my wheel in and out and move it around whilst bolted to the car its really loose i can pull it until the brake hits the rotor and i have basically lost all my braking as well the wheel is just loose and the rotor seems to be holding the wheel on. does any one know or had this happen to them before if so whats happened to my car? as if one more thing happens ill be swapping it for a hilux! as i have spent near 3 grand fixing it to drive it for a day and break again.

check your king pin bearings, and your rear wheel bearings too.

replace all of them if you have the cash.

if you sell it now & buy a hilux, you'll be buying someone elses problems.... buy the sounds of it you've nearly got all the bugs sorted out.

yeh which is why ill keep the zook as i even have transfer gears on the way :) well a 1L case. its just painful spending money then braking then sending to mechanic and then it braking within 24 hours. all the bearings seem fine so i will just do this one for now as i need the car on the road for uni work and holiday next week. now to find some one to do me my wheel bearing. how much would it cost for a new bearing and how much would it cost in labour? i have no tools here

Really mate they are not that hard to do. As others have said, about 2 hours to do them. Cost would be about $40 to $50 a side.
If you could get it to my place I'll do it for you. But if it's that bad you best not drive it till it's done. I have a press but you don't need one really.

Bearings somewhere between 40-50 a side, labour 1-2 hours. You might get out of it for $150-$200 if your lucky

i would love to bring it down but in all honestly i do not trust it and with the way my lucks going latley the wheel would fall off it. i can pull the wheel out all the way until the calipers are fully spread the brakes arnt even holding pressure. is it the same as a rear wheel where comes out with the axle? and am i going to have to re do all the diff oil as its brand new diff oil and hasnt even been put in 4x4 yet. if i can get it out i may be able to borrow room mates ute and come for a drive down. if so what tools will i need to remove it to get it to some one as my brothers coming up tomorrow so he can bring tools.

if it truly has randomly gone the locking nuts wasnt done up properly and has spun loose, or the races werent seated properly and have moved in more

In all truth stuff like this just going and being prepared to fix it right away is part and parcel of modifying these cars and using them every day, if you arent prepared to either spend a lot more time checking things over or dropping every thing to fix them then maybe its not the car for you, shit ive had to replace unis in the driveway with not even a vice so I could get to work, tis jsut how it is

this is totally understandable just when you do very very little offroad driving as this car in near a year of owning has been offroad less then 5 times, and has gone through 1 full engine 2 head gaskets on that engine and allot of other things and just paid sin16's boyfriend to fix it and put new engine in it which he has done an absolutely amazing job of my engine and and has cleaned up my engine bay incredibly well to get back and drive it from brisbane to work and home to have it fail just really pissed me off yes it is a 87 car so is old just is annoying when it all goes at once could it not have held up for a couple of weeks till i got some money behind me again. other wise i love the car.

If you dont have a lot of income (especially as a uni student)
I highly suggest you start acquiring tools and learning to fix it yourself.

I had to replace the front bearings on mine a few months ago.
I did the wheel bearings, kingpin bearings, knuckle seals and the hub while I was at it.

Cost about $140 for the lot, was messy and took me about 1/2 a carton

if i need tools i generally head home to my parents where their is a very large sidchrome tool box sitting and many more tools and work on it their. yes i am a uni student but i do have some form of income as i get centerlink and i do work so i can afford some things but just caught me off guard this week. and i would love to do all the work together but with funds and time all limited the others thing that aint broke will just stay how they are.

You have to constantly check them with bigger wheels especially. They love slowly working loose if its a daily driver. Just grab the front tyres and if they sway a bit tighten them up :P.

How does everyone tighten them btw? They require a pretty huge socket piece, i have seen some of these nuts done up with cold chisels and it isn't pretty and you can't get them as tight as using a socket and bar. My dad welded up similar socket for a 1" socket set, gets them pretty tight now.

Hrm ok, i'll have a go, i just recently did a few but some of my hubs are after market so slightly different. I'll edit this post too if any of it is incorrect :). Trying to remember.....

Put the hub in 2wd.
Take off the wheel. Loosen the nuts on the ground, then jack it up and take them off.
Take off the brake caliper off, 2 bolts hold this in from the back. Don't put your foot on the brake now or you will have fun pressing the piston back in.
Pull off the brake rotor now.
Remove the 6-8 bolts from the end of the hub (closest to you) and pull that bit off.
Remove the C shaped clip with 2 screwdrivers/pliers etc.
Undo the next 6 bolts holding the rest of the hub on.
Slide it all off.
Now you can see a big nut/washer/nut/(possibly)washer. (The bearings/more washers are all behind this also, if it still wobbles with the nuts tightened then the bearings are probably worn out, pretty hard to tell if they are worn or not by yourself unless you have seen a lot or they are completely destroyed. You will also get covered with even more grease and have to re grease them if you take it off to inspect them a bit.)
The washer needs the tabs bending back before you try undoing the nut.
Take the 1st nut and washer off.
Unbend the tabs on the 2nd washer if it has one.
Tighten that 2nd nut up pretty damm tight (this is an accurate measurement of tightness here).
Rebend the tabs on the 2nd washer if they were bent before.
Put the 1st tabbed washer back on.
Put the 1st nut back on and tighten it up very tight also.
Bend the tabs on the washer over.
Reverse the 1st few steps.

Cheers.

Tight and wheel bearings should never be used in the same sentence.

shouldn't they only be as tight as needed to get the play out of the wheel. if you don't have time i think i was lazy a little while ago just after doing all 4 in my suba and got one done on my vitara i think it was $170 at andrews high tech automotive.

ok thanks to Jazzor great instructions i had the front hub off in about 2o mins going very slowly watching what i was doing so i can remeber how to put it back together. i also found soon as i pulled the hub off the outside part of the bearing case came straight out and the inside part is absolutley rooted! so the bearing is actualy in like 3 or 4 pieces. so time for a new bearing knowing how easy it is i might do the other front one when i get the time and spare cash soon. thanks for all your help guys. also another question does this mean i need to now bleed my brakes again?

Only if you took the caliper off from the brake line itself
