hey guys got my wheel bearing done and went for a drive and noticed that their is a weird noise coming from my gear box. it started one day out 4x4ing with choppy and use to do it randomly when accelerating, now its making this noise all the time on and off only when accelerating randomly though. its hard to explain its sorta of a fluttering whine or something like that the noise is weird, what could this be and does it sound like im up for a new gear box as that was my guess i wont be a happy camper. thanks

rear unis are all good and its in 2 wheel drive so fronts not being used but they are getting replaced soon i swear its from the gear box maybe the uni on the jackshaft maybe. its really hard to explain the noise like a twitter noise, fluttering noise, comes from about the middle of the tunnel. its a possibility ill check the uni on the jackshaft if their are any on it tomorrow.

couldn't tell you to be honest box came in the car seems to be tight and changes well and i their a way to check the oil level? i have recently changed the bush over only thing i have touched on the box

If you haven't checked it sinse you bought it, i'd recommend draining the oil and putting clean stuff in.

what oil does the gear box take? and how much i will do this before i go to di on monday

There'll be a filler plug and a drain plug. Filler is the top one.

Take out the plug. A little bit should dribble out. Dip your finger in and check the colour. It should be a lighty mustard to light browny.

If it's discoloured, replace it. If it's low but okay, top it up. When it starts dribbling out of the filler plug, it's full.

80W-90 gear oil is what you'll need.

If i were in your position ( I actually am! ) I'd be dropping and changing the fluid.

yeh i will do that ill see how i go with money as im upraging head lights to hid's so i can have some decent light well amazing light with this pay and replacing a broken hub. so if i can top it up and hope the noise goes away would be great and when i get back from holiday ill drop the oil when i do my engine oil as well and re do it all

Priorities first! Coolness comes before practicality. Seriously tho since your a hard pressed uni student (as I) wouldn't it be best to hold off on your HID lights, change the oil in the box and see how it goes first. Then at least if it is shagged you have some coin to find a replacement?

For a clearer idea of the sound you can take the gear lever boot off and take it for a drive. My throwout bearing is pretty noisy with the boot off but not even noticeable with it installed.

im not doing hid for coolness the zook is cool enough as it is . im doing them for saftey as when i drive at night especially in wet my lights go as far as maybe like 5m's if that ahead they are ridiculous. when my brother has the same kit in his car and they are the same lights as what you see in the bmw and stuff and the same brightness if not better. im doing all these things for saftey as with living on the sunshine coast its always raining and also when you install these hid's it will be guaranteed brighter as you re do the whole entire loom with a new one that comes in the kit and only use the trigger wires from the standard loom. and they will probably have to wait as its my gear box making this funny noise and i just checked my unis and out of 6 unis which i have replaced one the other week 4 need replacing so i may as well do all 5 and know that im running 5 new unis. and also need to replace a locking hub and tighten new bearing up and also tighten opposite front bearing and hope it just needs tightening if not replace it. and take car back hopefully and get the oil that's poring out of it fixed. so pretty sure holiday is now officially canceled

just keep in mind that those HID kits are illegal, as they are not self leveling.

yeh i know they arnt legal as per the massive sings all over the box but i will do it and also since i dont cut anything on my loom if i need be ill just swap them back over. what did it cost you in defect points? and fine? do you think they are much better then stock and whatkit are you running? im going to get the hi low kit from jaycar

There are projector upgrade headlights available. Like $100 shipped off ebay. buy them, + 100W H4 globes and you're good to go.

They use all your factory wiring, all you gotta do is replace the headlight.

the issue with most sierra headlights is the wiring i like the hid's and they are only 150$ for hi lo

you'd be spewing if you fitted them & got defected, it's a good enough reason for a cop to pull you over & go over the rest of the 4wd... i'm guessing it's not engineered for all the mods?

Get a cannon to, so you won't hear the noise of the g/box or the po-po trying to pull you over..

hahaha well i was told by the mechanic no need for mod plat on the seats and no need for mod plate on duel fuel tanks just need a vented cap and all good so only thing is my 31"s which in qld cant be engineered and shackles so its not to bad.

no hid's yet i have put them off a couple weeks now as im going to spend the 150 on 5 new uni joints and a new locking hub and gear bx oil so car is ready fro double island and is reliable

A few relays, couple of wires and some connectors probs for a whopping ~20 bucks could fix that.

Wire upgrade built from parts as per Jrs post above ^, new cheap reflectors off ebay and phillips globes and my sierra has got better light output than my 350z (though they are projectors )
