Its a major defect as it affects the atmosphere, so there are pollution fines involved..

You just spent a few grand on the lpg, why can you put on a cat just to be on the safe side?

They talk of emissions testing for gas with a cat, there is nothing at all about no cat.

Found out a bit of info today so just posting up an FYI incase anyone ever goes this route.

There's enough reasonable doubt to get away without a cat converter if you're running straight LPG - enough to prove you're not deliberately rorting laws anyways. I went to get quotes today - two places said I can ditch it, two places said I have to keep it. I also went to the LPG installer where the opinion was divided too.

According to one exhaust mob, if i've removed the fuel tank it's hard evidence that i'm running 100% LPG, therefore i'll be exempt from needing a cat. According to the LPG installer, I have no O2 sensor and apparently that's another loose indicator whether or not a cat is required.

On the flipside one place have said i'll 100% need a cat, another place said i'll need to keep the cat unless it wasn't a factory install.


The LPG installer said most inspectors wouldn't even know what the cat looks like and would be low on their list of inspection priorities, so I could more than likely get away with it. Otherwise I can try and argue that the car didn't come standard with a cat. My last arguement is that the guy who installed my exhaust didn't install one because he said I didn't need one - I just wanted to save the money.


BTW - 4 quotes ranging from $900 to $970 for a full exhaust replacement.... that seems very exxy. $700 wthout a cat was the cheapest quote.

yeah I wouldnt listen to any of them, I havnent found anything but a nsw rta info sheet saying if it came with it it has to stay and other ingo saying a cat is still useful with lpg as it converts carbon monoxide

your exhaust is so dear I think cause you are failing the attitude test or asking for something stupid

i recon Id go without, andthen if an inspector has to look at your car an busts you for not having a cat, tell them ya mate sed ya didnt need one, dun an dusted.

Yeah I dunno why so dear either, maybe the businesses I went to (Carline, Macs Mufflers, Midas and another in Alderley) Just asked for quotes on a complete exhaust replacement from front to back, and also asked what they knew of my LPG situation... happy days, no bad vibes... no silly requests for a hi-clone tailpipe or anything of the like.

Might try some smaller private shops rather than the franchises, they might do better deals.

che_guitarra - i got a 2" hi-flow cat brand spanking new installed for $180 a few years ago... full exhaust before that was around $300 not including a new cat (using 2" pipe) - i have a tricky exhaust though with a crazy compound bend near the rear diff to clear the shocks.

realistically, if you chuck in a 2" cat onto your current setup for say $200 youre covered, and a 2" cat isnt going to restrict flow.
