An easy way to work it out is...
- Lock off one wheel
- Start turning the diff input shaft to take out the slack
mark start points on the input shaft and housing, hub and backing plate (or disc and plate)
- rotate the input shaft 4 or 5 and a bit times so that the wheel has rotated 2 complete turns and the 2 start marks are aligned
- work out on the input where your mark has landed in relation to that on the housing on a 10 point clock. So obviously 4 and 1/10 will be 4.1 and 4 and 3/10 will be 4.3. 5 and ~1/10 will be 5.12 etc
I did it on the weekend and was surprised just how easy it is.

x2
Can someone explain to me - if it is a alloy to steel conversion, why are the ring and pinion no longer needed. I assumed it is the diff housing that is being replaced. Obviously I am missing something?

I'm just down the road at Bracken Ridge
pretty sure it will be 5.12:1
people grab the steel diff & pinion housing out of the GV V6 manual to fit to the early vitara's the original GV ring & pinion is replaced with the 5.1 r&p out of the vitara, this is where the 4.3:1 Grand Vitara diff ratio's come from.
