Hey guys just wondering how many km's on a sierra 1.3ltr motor would be too many, or how long these little motors go for before they are useless or really annoying to maintain ??????

That will seriously depend upon maintenance.
A looked after engine will have no drama with 300k plus, a cheaply looked after engine, no idea, depends on how far between oil changes, filter changes, oil grade, cooling system, style of driving etc.

seem em rooted at 100k, seen em do over 300k, vitaras go even longer
run em til they knock and blow smoke, how long that is depends on how good the oil is and how much its thrashed

Sully has over 300k on the clock, not sure if it's been rebuilt in the past, but it's about to blow..
Some say 150k is time for a re-fresh, thay are only a lil eng doing a big job..

Ahh yep, So what signs would you be looking at to see if the engines gone in these things? Like is their anything they are prone to fault on?

nope they are bulletproof otherwise, check the compression, use better than whatever you think is good enough oil and coolant and make sure teh tappets are set properly

That's good advice, how loud should my knock be before I worry about it??

To the OP tho, he is right, you can still drive em with so much piston clatter you'd think some lil prick was in your eng with a jack hammer!!

what exactly does engine knocking sound like? out of curiosity...
back on topic, mine has close on 230,000km on the clock, doesnt blow smoke and doesn't use any oil (well, not a noticeable amount, but i do run 20W50 which is quite thick) and the motor is one of the only things ive never had a problem with (touch wood), yet i can add up 3 grand worth of repairs ive done elsewhere over the last year, mosty driveline related.

i think that once a car is 10years old whatever is on the odo is irrelevant, the
way it drives is much more important.

The 1.3 engines are cheap as chips, so I wouldnt worry if it has 200k on it. If it starts to make noises or use lots of oil, just buy another engine, rebuild it then swap em over.
