they are picks i stole of the internetx, now 100% sure whats going on with that weird blurry bit, but i think it might be to hide the dodgyness of the hagan widening mod, where they redrill the bolt hole on the rear crossmember....

XL7's electric operation & Gv's vacc, I'm think the the XL7's are bigger to.
The housing bolt's together where the Gv is one bit..

Bit of research done. There is both types of front diff fitted to xl7's.
The salisbury type looks totally different, so I can't make a mistake.
Not sure why some are different, so I'd better look see before buying.

Another mishearing, or misunderstanding by me.
I only got the axle housing steel piece, without pinion housing.
It was an XL7 and did have correct diff, so there must be two options.

I have to wait for a broken one to come in,
to be able to afford an empty pinion housing.

May revisit fitting Sierra housing if that takes too long.
Or strengthen the alloy one.
Or just keep looking thru wreckers for a full steely.
Hope I didn't waste more money

Got a bit of cash together at last.
So now we are hunting for a steel front diff.
At wreckers and online parts locators (thanks CJ good idea)
Found a maybe 2 1/2 hours away,
just waiting for more info to make sure it is steel.
Is there anything I can ask, to try and avoid a wasted trip?
I'm told its a 98 GV with steel front, but have not seen it yet

"its the late model one, so we will supply the mount as well."

Part of a reply from a zook wrecker.
Is a "late model"front diff going to be useful for me?

this link shows how much the sump on the SV420 (2.0L) needed to be adjusted to get the late model pinion mount to work, i'm not sure how much clearance there is on the 1.6 SE416 vitara's

Thanks heaps, will try for the 98 model that is on offer, but will go for a later model if needed.
Internet shopping is scarey, hope it is a steely.
I been almost sold axle housings and other wrong bits a couple a times.
If I wanted to modify to fit, would go back to fitting a Sierra front diff.
It does look like the xl7 mount, which looked like it would fit mine.
You did a good job breaking that diff :) 8O

grave dig.

Putting a sierra rear into front anvil housing. Its so close to fitting its not funny. Need to attack it with a grinder to make it fit.

Got some questions.

Anyone done this modification with 3inch diff drop brackets?

Christover, they're not my pics, those were stolen from outers.

This thread has some good ideas on different pinion mount options. There is another thread but I can't find it at the moment. http://bbs.zuwharrie.com/content?topic=100689.0;all

Armsup you'll be able to off load the 4.3 or 4.6 R&P to one of those sierra owners

I likes Ya thinkings, will offset some of the cost.
Will check ratio in future, not allowed to lift anything yet.
It has a vaccuum inlet/outlet on it, maybe part of auto free wheel?
I'll just block that off.

Now to save for a locker to go in it.

the vaccuum is the locking mechanism to engage the front diff, GV run a drive flange thingo instead of free wheeling hubs. e.g. the CV's spin the whole time & the diff center locks/unlocks.

Maybe broke too many free wheeling hubs.
Mines been converted to manual free wheeling hubs.
Nobody seems to like them, maybe GV system more reliable?

I came across an unexpected issue, but easy fixed.
Is only a problem if using a Sierra carrier into steel GV diffs
that use an internal mechanism in place of free wheel hubs

  PS
EPIC FAIL

One Vitara drive shaft is fatter than the other, did not allow for that.
Got diff and locker all together ...but alas drivers side Vit shaft no fit into sierra carrier.
Made drive shaft fit with grinder, to test locker, but of course it leaked badly.
Locker not unlocking too well, so must play with clearances anyway.

Choices that I can think of
1. do conversion to fit passenger side bolted type to drivers side.
That would work, but cost factor is high.

2. I really think the Sierra locker will work in the Vitaras 2 pinion carrier, as long as I use Sierra side gears..
cheaper option, but unsure if it will function.

3. Cant think of anything nice :rambo:

For now, will pull diff out and be 2wd again while thinkings.

Lockright auto lockers fit and function in sierra 2 pin ctrs fine if you want one to try. PJzook has one in his and it worked fine.

Ive got a sierra 2 pin carrier here if you need one.

thanks but its the sierra carrier thats a problem, where the drive shaft slides thru on one side dont fit.
But I have 2 vit carriers so will try putting it in in a vit one tomorrow.
I can't see any reason why it cant fit, as long as I use my side gears

have you tried a vit side gear in the sierra carrier?
or is it that the axle wont sild into where the side gear is.?

Im watching your progress closely as if it works i might do the same in my new GV
