hi,just wondering what are peoples thoughts on the earlier vits,99 models etc in the grand vitaras.Are possibly looking at something along these lines to replace my girlfriends barina and gain a bit more power,room etc.Will not see much 4wding at all
Are you better off chasing a j20a(94kw,174nM), or the h25(106kw,208nM)?
the power is 12kw extra on the v6 and 34nM torque for 1 lph more around town and 1/2 lph more on the hiway at 11.2 town and 8.1 hiway.
These figures for fuel cant really be guaranteed id guess so just wondering who has had what experience with what.

Personally I am not a fan of the shape of the grille and headlights on the 99 model, but I'd still take one.

The H25 would be the pick of the two. That little bit more power is definately worth it IMO.

thanks pete,yeah i dont like the grille/lights alot either but cant have everything either and for the bit less money you spend on the older ones ill put up with the looks.
who knows by the time we maybe get something like this the extra coin might allow us to go newer.

just dont want to buy some thirsty car either but seems pretty good to me.Will a h25 tow my zook allright if it ever had to??

might start looking into them a bit,they really dont have alot of room behind the rear seats tho,surely could make it work tho

The h25 is pretty good on fuel...until you do mods.
I drove mine from Sydney to Wangaratta on one full tank (pre mods), it's a bit sluggish on big long hills, but it would be the pick.
If you can, try to get one with a steel front diff,
Check for timing chain shudder, check that the t/case doesn't jump out of gear and check for cluch slip (in the manual).

what models have the steel diff?i know nothing about them in that sense.it wont be getting mods really so doesnt bother me a heap,maybe snorkle,spotties and std size or up 1 muddies.i have my twin locked lux on 33s and the twin locked sierra so the aim would be to have something we can drive around town,do trips etc in a bit more easily and comfy and to cart some kiddies around when that all begins.

as for the 2.5 being sluggish up hills,we own a 99 barina,my lux and zuk so anythings an upgrade there

your right pete,it will have more room than the beep cos i wont let the boot be filled with a 15" sub this time

Well put it this way. It has more room than the Barina

Not by much - comparing the 5dr GV to a 5dr Barina - with the rear seats up there is more room in the GV, and it does not have the lip that the Barina does, but with the rear seats down, the load area is pretty much the same in terms of floor space, although the GV has a higher roof line.

If ya not planning on using it for 4x4 then why not get a falcon or crapadore? same money but heaps more power for towing and luggagespace.

b4t i guess im just as mad as everyone else on here and like zooks.In all honesty i do agree with what you say tho about a falcon etc,lot less money,heaps of space bla bla.
also when i say no 4wding,i guess it would see days up the local pine forest and nice scenic places so it would get put in 4wd definately just not 4x4ing as such like we do most weekends in the other 2

any other probs with them?or years models to look for?id love one like yours b4t but bit $$$$

i believe the early auto's came with the alloy diff, but if you not doing any "real" offroading it should hold up.

From what I've read/been told the auto's had the alloy front diff housing until later in the build run, not sure on the year that they went to steel.... all manuals have the steel diff & there was a slight change in pinion mounts around 99 but that only affects the vitara owners wanting to do the steel diff swap.

Tha auto's use more fuel but if you going to be doing alot of towing, get one.

Auto driver's do it with a foot to spare..

really,i was sure that the manual V6's over here had only came out with the steel diff? the only manual that i've seen that had the alloy diff was the SQ420 J20a.

I have a 98 SQ420 (which by the way IS a GV) manual with an alloy diff, and the parts manuals also shows that exact part number for the early SQ625 - it did change a few years later, but I can't tell you if that was a change to cast iron or just to the newer housing with the higher filler hole.

i'm aware that the GV has the SQ prefix, i'm pretty sure the change in part number was for the different pinion mount found on the later GV's.
