gday mate, welcome to the site.

There are pluses and minuses for both cars. The sierra is an awesome offroader, but sorta sux onroad, its cheap to make into a true offroad weapon.

The vitara is a fine offroader, and if you have money to spare can also be made into a offroad weapon, but, its a nice onroad car, more power, better fual economy, rides and brakes far better, quieter, in all, both are very good cars.

IF its offroad mostly, sierra.

don't call me a nancy but i would rather see a new driver in a vitara rather then a sierra.
they are a lot more forgiving and when the inevitable happens they are safer to crash.

crap i am getting old.

1-2k will be hard to get one for that price. if you do it will be flogged.

3k will start giving u a few options but still not much.

either one you will have lots of fun in mate.

and welcome to the forum.

haha sierras are held together with big #3 screws vitaras actually use bolts and stuff. but seriously they are wider and have better brakes and will still out wheel any of the fat cars.

when my boy gets his license he is getting a really tired 2wd diesel single cab hilux.
no power and no passengers.

i hear that there reasonably simple engins i am reasonably mechanicaly minded and my big bro is a heavy diesel mechanic so idealy somthing cheep but driveable would be best a freind of mine just picked one up a few days ago for $350 bucks slapped a ew carby on it and its running like new its got a little rust but nothing terible...was looking 4 somthing like this hopfully. I am not to desperate i dont get my licence till july next year but if somthing pops up i am keen to have a look..and thanks u all 4 da welcoms...slight mechanical probs are probably ok

i voted for a sierra as you'll struggle to find a vitara for that sort of money.

I went vitara for reasons of comfort, brakes, power (it's a relative thing), fuel economy, space, coil-springs, reliability (efi in particular), power steering, air-con, underdog capability (most people reckon they'll go nowhere then you drive rings around them) and everyday driveability.

Things that may piss you off about them - lack of flex in the front (IFS, talk to joeblow about a good solution for this :P), the alloy front diff, more expensive to mod over sierras in terms of lifting and gearing and the fact that there isn't as wide a range of accessories available as you may want (or they are too bleeding expensive).

All that said, however, I will go back to a vitara when mine dies - she does everything i ask of her and costs me bugger all to run.

Just my opinion as a vitara owner ;)

Welcome to Auszookers !

Always good to see another Perthite here...

I voted Vit... because i owned a 89 Vit for 2 years, and i friggin loved it !
Great onroad and offroad, good power/torque, and i am a big fan of coil suspension, i would get another one if anything happened to my Grand Vit !

Have you tried ebay or Quokka ? If you have some mechanical knowledge, it will make it easier to check out/over a Zook before you pay for it... personally, i would get a Vit, they are more forgiving and stable... i see Zooks around for private and dealership sale at least once a month, so will keep an eye out for you, but you will be looking at $2K minimum for a decent one... but, occasionally, a private cheap sale will land you a gem, thats possibly never been offroad, owned by an old couple who dont know its true value... but they are rare... Good Luck ! :D

i voted sierra even though ive just bought a vit, all mates of mine have sierras and and all illegally done a spring over conversion, couple hours and free 4 inch suspension lift. its just so cheap to do these things into weapons

in my head i see me buying a nice lottle 4B that i can in the next five years turn into a reel offroad wepon then i can piss of when i finish all my studdies...but most importantly somthing that dosent eat fuel and is reasonably cheep to mod (i hear that you can go along way with a welder some metal a grinder and a lot of time) hhhhmmmm i know nthat all you perants are going to pounce on this put....power wise what are they like...are they realy that bad (whats top speed)

i went sierra as for offroad they are better and i own a lwb so biased... also a sierra is a cheaper car to own in the way of mods and and repairs and so forth, easy to work on and they are pretty cool cruising around with no roof and stuff on. and with your budget you will struggle to find any vitara but a cheap sierra that you could work on over the next coming months before you get your licence. on the other hand i did want to sell my sierra and buy a vitara for the fact of the sierra is a bit rough and no where near the same comfort level as the vitara and the vitara is a better daily driver car and is more in the way of saftey as well. the sierras are slow i can get about 110 out of mine but thats because im running 31's and stock gearing but in saying this they can still get you a fine. it all depends what you want, a car to learn the roads and how to drive on your own in i would say vitara, but something to flog to all death and take off road and not care if you dint and so forth sierra. as every one will tell you you dont actually learn how to drive until you get your p's because before then your driving to a standard of how your parents or whoever is driving with you on your l's and the department of transport. when you get your licence you will grow your own driving style and learn how you want to drive.

my hardtop 1.6 sierra could do 130kph but it was frighting. worse
then my old 1971 40 series softtop at 120mph and it took both lanes off the road to go in a straightish line.
