Heard of the new twin stick craze on outerlimits?
You can get a second transfer case lever to disengage 4wd with the hubs locked in.
You can be in 4wd, then flick the lever and be in 2wd low (rear drive only.
Here's a pic of the thing...
here's a thread where they're giving some away free, sounds great and that's very generous, for an advertising thing i guess eh.
http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=1316232#1316232
My issue would be, apart from the dude that wants to do rear burns in low because he hasn't got enough power to do rear burns in high, ....
when would anyone ever use it, in normal 4wding? seems like it would just be a "cool factor" thing?

oh yeah of course you can use it heaps of good places, just think of all the times you need to go really slow without the front wheels driving but having the hubs locked
yeah I cant think of any either
the whole rear burn thing might work if you had front cutting brakes but I have never seen it work well cause it will slide the direction gravity wants it to and if you cant turn them in high then you probably wont get teh wheels spinning fast enough in low anyway
I guess if you had too many stubbie coolers to fit on 2 sticks or needed to reverse a trailer slowly with a seized front diff it could be useful

rear burn does work as we used it a fair bit at pro truck, but there's a way to do it, Greg showed us what to do and we were surprised how well it worked, doesn't require gravity.
I just can't see this twinstick thing being of any use to people other than being cool or having it in comps, but as you said rear burns might be best at high speed rotations, and not in low.
It looks like a very simple mod to make and produce, so they need to convince the average wheeler that they need it? and i guess the average wheeler would think it's great because of the price. It's something cool they can get for $250 . Might be better spending the money on something else?

there is a fair wack of history to suzuki twin sticks too
for ages people have had 2 low with modified gates and single stick, A guy designed a twin stick setup with a boot that worked (thats the major part) and patented it but never got it to work, from then on anyone who started making twin stick would cop a warning from this guys lawyers about breach of patent so they never went anywhere
I dont know if somebody got around this or the guy doesnt care anymore but I guess it caused some hype around people that remember that snowballed

ahh i suppose the normal rubber stiff boot interferes with the other stick? so they need a shorter more flexible boot? but then if you need twin sticks you shouldn't be worrying about having a pretty boot , just so you can keep the interior pretty?

nah that bit is easy, its the boot on the transfer that keeps the crud out and to a point the oil in thats the problem
you can make your own twin stick with 2 stock sticks and a grinder

ahh cool.
we can sell the
auszookers twin stick kit
1. a second stock transfer case stick
2. a $30 bunnings grinder
and we better make it cheaper than the opposition, say $200 ?

The thing I have found by researching is just removing the detent ball for 2wd low can leave you stuck in neutral and requires removal of the shifter to fix. Twin sticks are useful for people who cannot afford manual lockers for the front and have welded fronts or lockrights that affect the steering. It would also be a heap of fun on the beach.

no just removing the detent ball is wrong, you have to modify the shift rails to not jam
and how is a welded front diff or lockrite going to be any lighter with the hubs locked in 4wd or 2wd?

yeah, the auto locker should work regardless of drive, if it gets full on power it should lock which the twin stick may avoid.
but the front welded diff will be locked no matter what if the hubs are locked. so steering will be shit if it has drive or no drive.

FMH! I read about this a while back on Zukiworld I think. But they were doing it to Vitara's. Still bezots me why you'd go to all that hassel and buggering about doing this mod & making twin boot covers for no gain!Accept for making things more confusing when off roading. All you need is another thing to worry about!

ive done the 'detent ball removal' on stock shifter and its a good mod for me as i have a lockrite in the front.
yeah, the auto locker should work regardless of drive, if it gets full on power it should lock which the twin stick may avoid.
steve wrote:
yes it will work but its the NOT working that i want... its easily disconnecting the drive to the front that will make it like an open center and actually steer..
twin stick. one stick for 2wd & 4wd
other stick for low range and high range
as for the TWIN STICK option. thats just ease of shifting, as the 2L mod with single stick is tricky to get into gear when off road, but still doable..

I agree some comments here may be a bit negative, but if it makes people think about what the actual practical uses are for this mod, then that'd be a positive thing
It just seems like a trend to me of everyone wanting something coz everyone else wants it.
I haven't seen any useful purpose for it yet. If you're just doing forestry tracks you wouldn't need a diff locks. If you have diff locks you should be in 4wd and doing things that warrent diff locks

Ahhh crap, OK I should finally put Stevie boy out of his misery and put my hand up to having a twin stick kit. Mind you I should mention that 2 factors afect this descisio( go the spelling!):
1. I have been drinking
2. I can't remember. Possibly due to reason 1.
Anyway, the twinstick thing was du e to me having problems with th e transfer case shifter thingy in the apst and teh fact that a mate of myine put the ordewr in.
i wlltry to get some pics up soon of the instal. Please be mindfull that I have just. rebuild me tcase and have to pull it apart to remove the detent ball, installl some shimes and the twinstick stuff. Add to that the work I have to do to make the twin stick boot work and it will take whiles. espeially considering that my usual pace that i work at is beaten but snails, slugdm, sloths, and other aminals that begins with the letters S.
Fawk me i need a s atnohters sctcotch.
zzzz
