Hey guys,

I just ordered a spring over kit from snake racing but they are out of stock for 6 weeks and have not charged me as of yet.

Is there any better kits out there available? Or cheaper ways of doing it?

Regards
Shane

Snake are not cheap by any means.

The cheapest way would be to make everything yourself.

Why do you need to spring over?

Yeah I figured that, pretty hard to figure out all the specs for everything though.

I'm putting 33's on this in a month or so with just 2" lifted springs fitted. (29's in the pic)

I run 33"x 12.5s with 2" body, 1" spring lift, and abit of hammering.

Front diff is forward to clear firewall.
Rear diff is moved back to clear front of flare, and to look proportioned.

A spring over will not fix everything.

Then you want to extend your bump stops, talk to daisy on here. He's running 34's spua (pretty sure he's spua. lol)

You can lift and lift you car, at the end of the day, you're difs will still be at the same height regardless of SPUA or SPOA, and in all honesty, you can get close to the same flex results sprung under if set up right.

Seriously, do some rock solid research, and work out exactly what you want, because for the ridiculous amount of money you were about to give snake racing, you can spend on much more important things like crawler gears, armor and lockers.

if your dead set keen on spoa, then lower your bump stops till it rides the same as it does now, your not going to get anymore flex (except the tyre weight) and if you don't extend your bumps and keep your sway bar your going to have a boat on your hands. im interested in spoa also.... never thought i'd say that..... :?

33's aren't a valid reason to run a SPOA.

How much uptravel do you think you need? Uptravel is for speed, and a SPOA SWB zuk on 33's isn't going fast off road.

1" of uptravel is plenty in a trail car.

2" might be better, but 3" is probably a waste.

In any case, what makes you think you gain uptravel with a spoa? The amount you can compress a spring before damage is the same regardless of whether the axle is under or over the spring, so once the car is properly bumpstopped, you gain no uptravel with a SPOA setup over SPUA. (yes, really)

If you think you will have more uptravel without guard work with a SPOA, what you are really saying is I'm willing to give up stability for massive lift to avoid cutting the guards. I don't quite understand this - it's kind of suffering for your art, don't you think?

Anyway, just to challenge the notion that big tyres equal big lift, here's a little car I've been involved in.

[img][/img]

That's 35's with no suspension or body lift. It doesn't even run bumpstop spacers. In fact, the front end has inboarded springs and bumpstops, so it flexes harder than a stock WT.

With 31's on it it looks almost stock - you'd never look at it twice, and it's so stable offroad with the 35's on it that even a mildly lifted sierra feels like it's going to kill you trying to follow it.

SPOA is a lot of $$$ to run a 33" tyre and lose stability.

Just my 2C.

It's interesting that when I used to say this stuff 5 years ago I was flamed constantly. I guess fashions change.

Steve.

Damn I hate it when steves right!!!
When I built me 1st zuk there was no internet and none of my friends ran zuks so the only info I had was yankee mags.
Ive only ran spoa coz thats what I built 1st and didnt want the cost of changing.
The only reason Im spoa on this zuk as its running toyota diffs and it was easier but Ive tried to get it as low as possible and may even get some reverse wrap springs to try to lower it even more.
Its not too bad as its a lwb and I listened to steves advise (damn hes right again) on correct bumpstop spacing now its ALOT more stable.
In short if I did it again on zuk diffs Id stay spua and cut as much as possible to fit the tyre I wanted.
Low is the new lift Id rather drag a skid plate and be super stable that be tall and tippy so I didnt worry about scratches.
Btw I dont thin you can realistically do cheap and spoa together (wish someone had told me that)
Nik

Hijack on (Sorry):

It runs doubletoughs and a detroit in the front and a minispool in the back.

Currently a G16A, trimatic and 4:1 case gears with 3.7 diffs.

The tall diff and auto take the punch out of the driveline so it's fairly soft on it's driveline, but the rear axles are on borrowed time.

We're building a WT floater for it which will make all the difference.

This isn't enough axle for NSW, but it's fine in Vic.

There's about 5 cars running doubletough front axles in the club here in vic with zero issues.

We were taking out rear axles from time to time, so for cars with an overdrive gearbox we have been building vitara rear based floaters, and with 35's these have been perfectly reliable. Unfortunately, those with trimatics need 3.7/3.9 diff gears so the full floating axles will be set up on WT sierra housings. not as strong as Vitara, but axle shaft strength will be the same, the housing is weaker and the ring gear smaller, but the WT diffs have aout 15mm more ground clearance - so its swings and roundabouts.

I'm satisfied that for us on victoria, this setup is as much axle as a sierra with <100hp and up to about a 36" tyre needs.

We've played with MQ diff conversions, and they are tough, but the end result is a heavy car with less ground clearance... running the same size tyre - no point really. (it is a cheap swap though)

Steve.

Hijack off :D

there are no 'complete' kits on the market, and most are rubbish. to do a spoa well alot of research, time and know-how is needed. they can be done very, very well, but most people stuff it up by putting lifted springs on etc. keeping new perches as close to the diff as you can, new shock mounts for longer versions, correct bumpstop calcs etc will all take time. 'stability' is a very loose term. sure, a spoa done very wrong will result in the vehicle being less stable. funny thing is i have seen more drivers roll vehicles from thier own actions or lack of driving skills rather than vehicle setup. i had a spring over for years.......never rolled.....allways was stable. kenns lj has a spring over......and that thing is a quad bike with a roof!. once again....he never rolled it and he is known for doing some wacky stuff.

lately i get a heap of questions regarding the coil conversions i do. 'that looks better than a spoa' they say......'that sits alot better than a spoa' they say.....well, its not that much lower than a spoa.....maybe 20mm........and guess what.....its stable, and so is the driver.

don't go jumping into this without a heap of research. if you do tackle it take your time and don't be cheap.

i've got a SPOA sierra running hilux front leaves all round - the leaves run dead flat, infact the fronts are ever so slightly inverted (not cool i know)... mines engineered and cost a bomb once you take into account custom mounts, chassis extension, driveshafts, brake lines, shocks, shock hoops, bump stops, steering, trac bars, and prolly a whole heap of other stuff i've forgotten.

is it stable? hell yes it is... could i have achieved the same tyre size another way? sure, easily... same suspension droop? doubt it.

in the end - do what you want, but whatever you do, do it properly, dont cut corners and always consult an engineer before doing anything.
