I am also looking at getting a hand winch, for that just in case factor... i think i will need something with a higher rating though, i know i would feel better with a higher rating, as my GV weighs 1500kg's... but i can see that winch goes through a pulley system, so it may be ok... not alot of info about this hand winch there... they do have a higher rating hand winch there -

But $500 seems a bit much for it to me... will have to shop around see what i can find...

Not very effective way of being recovered. Great if you have about three weeks and are not going uphill. There is no way to back of the load and release the ratchet system. You have to pull the car forward off the winch so that the weight can be relived so that the ratchet can be released. VERY VERY hard to do going up a hill. Trust me. and that was just pulling a XY falcon up a concrete driveway.
I would recommond a hand winch like a cable type tirfor. Here is a brand new one for sale cheap

Ha ha, yep i understand they arnt very effective, and they do take a while to get anywhere useful... bit i dont intend taking my GV any place i need recovering from... but saying that, i have had it crossed up enough to loose all traction, thankfully i was with others to give me a shove, but if i was alone..... and even the simplest tracks can hide hidden obstacles that can get one stuck... so yeah, i would like a hand winch to be in the back, just in case... and they are handy to have...

Mac they are better than nothing. I have used one to right a rolled car twice and also used it a couple of times to support before its gone over.
They are pretty shit but they do the job they advertise and yes a cable pulling recovery winch like a tirfor is shit loads better but takes up shit loads more space.

You would be surprised what you can do with one of these, and they can actually be let out under load, they are designed to do so, it is slow yes but not as slow as waiting for someone to drive up the track where you are stuck.
Has anyone seen the demo at the ekka where the dude uses a couple of bent pieces of metal and feeds a rope around it to obtain a ratio advantage. He then gets a kid from the audience to lift a V8 engine 5 feet off the ground using this simple rope winch.
I was so impressed i bought one for $20, we have played with it and it is great, you can pull a suzuki off the ground and it fits in the glove box.
I will get a demo filmed for fun.

i have personally recovered a short wheelbase 70 series up a step up and up a steep hill with a similar sort of winch good if you you aren't by yourself you really need someone to drive at the same time very slow because they only have about 2m of pull on them but mine has got my subaru out of lots of trouble numerous amounts of time.

that or a few shackles and a heap of telecom rope and some brains will do just as good a job and take up no room or money

Thanks for all replies. For the price I think I will buy one and do a few test with it and as mentioned above, maybe record it.

A mate and I bought a set each of these at the 4wd show in vic last year.
They work well, but the rope used is crucial to overcoming the friction.
Which is why we have 50m of rope each in our recovery gear and havent needed a winch yet.

I think i will leave the cheap ebay option... for now... prefer something more robust, and preferably, Aussie made...

Hmmm that actually looks pretty good for the price... my only concern is that the handle looks like pretty thin sheet metal... and where the cable is secured on near the crimp, also looks like pretty thin metal also... is this the one you used to recover the zook ?... what are your opinions of it and the construction ?

nope that was a good 4/5 years ago!
i once walked for 5 hours in the freezing cold and rain with 6 mates due to both 4wd's getting stuck at exactly the same time. if the walk didnt kill us the waiting 3 hours for help sure as hell nearly did! we were lucky that there is a 24 hour saw mill out there and the Japanese guy was nice enough to let us use the phone! the funny part was nither cars were very stuck.. i got pulled out buy a 4wheeler! LITERALLY! i vowed to get something simple like this... never know it might save your/my life!
put this in2 google maps and it will tell u where we were
edit we also walked it at night in the middle of winter!

Yep thats what i want to avoid... i would rather be able to help myself out of trouble, than rely on someone to rescue me... as a few hours waiting for help, out in the bush in the middle of summer, could mean life or death... so that one on ebay you got, is the construction as flimsy as it looks, and what are your opinions of its effectiveness/usability for recovery ?

It arived today
the quality looks to be pretty much spot on!
the only issue is that you have to engage the drive lock, every time you pull it. make sene? you can also relse one knotch at a time.
it easly pulled th zook long on the flat with the back wheels locked up. ok well not easly BUT did it.
you can also change from a single line t a doubble line pull in around 2 min with a set of needel nose pliers.
i think i may change the hooks to shackels. but othre than that it looks sweet!

I was recovered by a hand winch on saturday. The bloke said he paid $200 for a new one off ebay then bought a tree strap for $50.
It took 25/30 reps to pull me out of a bog hole. All up it took 5mins and the car moved a few inches with rep.
It was this design, not sure of the brand. I think they are good value for what they are. I was a bit unsure if it would work at first but i got me out.
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Black-Rat-Hand-W ... 415327936e
Once i was out of the hole, on and uphill level i pulled the handbrake on and he released the tension with a lever on the winch and we took the cable off. Only downside is the 15m of cable that had to be un-rolled fed through the winch and packed up muddy.

I have one. Never used it.
I generally always have a strap and someone else to help. Buddy system.
New suz will have a proper lowmount winch.

Saved me many times, ive pulled myself out of a creek buried to my sills in soft sand.. IT took some throttle and a good 10 minutes solid of winching, everyone who tried snatching me from that spot sunk to much.. Its bloody short tho with around a 3M pull. Gotta use a decent extention strap that doesnt stretch.
