Hi all, just wondering if it is illegal/defectable/insurance voiding/etc etc
If you run a directional tyre in the reverse direction
Most directional tyres have a rotation direction arrow on the sidewall, including mine

Today i reversed my Kumho KL71 M/Ts, to test the difference on Sand
I know they will be worse on Mud, and better on Rock.. And now i've concluded that they are also better on Sand when reversed

Considering leaving them this way, but i figured i'd ask because i wasn't completely sure

do you drive your rig on road?if so it will be a dog in the wet...the reason they are directional is because the tread pattern is an aggressive "wet" tyre...turn them around and they wont be channeling the water out the sides....but I cant help you on the legalities...but it can be dangerous.....

I dont think its illegal, if insurance are thorough and inspect the car, should you have an accident and they see that, yes it possibly could be voiding insurance... the tyres also have a warranty, and reversing them would void tyre warranty... but the thing that i think is most important, if they have a direction on them, then its for a purpose, like the steel belts, and polyestor/nylon cords, are laid in the rubber to work in a certain direction, and if reversed, could actually damage the tyres and make them unsafe onroad... so IMO, i would put them back on to work in the direction they were designed for...

Wouldn't know sorry ;) Just having a joke about the way you jumped on Greg's post that it is okay. Seriously, ring RTA or whoever you have over there and get an answer out of them. Telling the copper "But, but the guys on Auszookers said it was okay!!!" really doesn't cut it ;) :D

Before you worry about that though consider what others are saying about whether it is safe. Insurance, legalities etc are useless if you've slid on a wet road and are dead. Make sure you're happy with that aspect first.

you wont run em backwards for long once you relise how shit and noisy they are in every other aspect bar the fact you dont dig into soft sand, which by the way is your driving style or lack of rather than the tyres fault

I bet you it is illeagal to run them backwards as well, they are designed and approved to run on roads the RIGHTway and the internal belting etc may be different due to this, You running them backwards cancels this approval

i'd tend to agree - the laws in australia are pretty tight on stuff like that. if you don't want to call a transport authority, go to a tyre fitter and ask them... sure they might not know, but if its a liability to them they wont do it.

It is not illegal to run your tread pattern reversed!!!
Other wise you would need two spares when they sell cars with Directional tyres. As long as there is a minimum tread depth, carrying capacity and speed rating you are fine.
Look at the Bridgestone Adrenalin tyres. They have both directional and asymetrical patterns so they will be reversed on one side of the vehicle no matter what. If you have a directional pattern on a rolling axle it is better to run them in reverse.

Have you seen the tread pattern on a KL71? They aren't quiet regardless what you do.
I've been driving on the sand in this car since i was 14, i could do it asleep and handcuffed.
Muddies are not ideal for the soft sand, especially not directional muddies.
By reversing the tyres i mimic a rock tyres tread pattern.. And instead of plowing the sand out to each side, i'm hanging on to it.
I spent some time in 2WD to test aswell, the roostertail off the back wheels is less, so is the rate which you dig yourself down
When my 33"s are bought, they'll be a nondirectional muddie.. Something like a BFG Wrangler M/T or MT MTZ, but til they i thought i'd experiment.

Obviously i will revert them to the correct direction soon, because they'll be useless in the mud/clay otherwise.

I know a few tyre fitters.. The one i asked said there wasn't any problem with it.. But i might keep asking around

You have asked a tyre fitter!

I have spent 4 years in Automotive and Ag tyre industry fitting tyres, then moved onto Earth mover tyre fitting for 5 years and now have been an Engineer for Bridgestone 2 years.

If I don't know an answer I can find it out easy enough.

The casing and belt structure are the same between a non directional and directional tyres, it is purely the tread pattern that is different.

Whenever I've had directional tyres, the spare has a non-directional pattern and is designed just to get you somewhere to get the tyre repaired...

Every state has a leaflet about wheels and tyres, usually goes on about sizes, construction, speed ratings required but I have havent seen any reference to this before

I also cannot see in any type of tyre how laying the belts in a manner that makes them work rotating in a certain direction would work, given belts dont really perform like that

I think the best you will get is the manufacturer would say that performance of the tyre would be reduced running htem backwards, afterall a tyre company probably has a lot better idea of what works in tyre design than some dude on the internet with 2c in his pocket

In the days before space saver spares and cost cutting you use to get a full size spare and alloy rim to run on you car that is identical to the tyres on the car.
Those stupid space savers are only rated to 80km/h and if you got a flat 200km from a tyre shop it was a slow drive to get the origional tyre fixed.

Could be worse, my Swift Sport has no spare at all!!

Yep, but i wouldnt trust one of those.
I spotted a screw in my girlfriends sport and the tyre was slightly down so i said ring work tell em your gonna be late and take it straight to the tyre place around the corner.

Yeah, i drove to Cervantes on the weekend and I was paranoid about getting getting a flat outside mobile range on the side of the road at night... Not the best, I'd rather a pissy little spacesaver than nothing...

Ah ha, well there you go... i was also just wondering, if the tread is designed to eject mud, and they are reversed, to direct in, would they run hotter than normal ?
