hi all,
i bought my first zook 2 weeks ago and im totally wrapped in it. i had heard they were fun but words cant describe how awesome they are!
i have some mates who have customised their toys and im ready to start mine.
my plans are as follows:
hilux locker diffs -alrady have
35" muddies - already have
gti swift motor - bought yesterday, want to rebuild it with lumpier cam etc to give a little more bottom end.
2" body lift - work with stainless so no dramas making my own
2" spring lift
custom extended shackles - again i work with steel and wont have any dramas making my own. although all input is appreciated.
my question is...
im pretty sure the stock motor will have some trouble turning the 35's, and will need some sort of reduction gearing. not sure which avenue to follow... transfer case gears, diff ratios, dual transfer cases, 1L transfer case??? im very lost on the matter and would love any suggestions
thanks heaps

Transfer Case gears, nothing else will turn 35's with ease, may also need 5.11 diffs as well.
If you need input on shackles, the body lift will be an issue. Anyways sounds like a good offroad only project.
Username Pubic, leads me to ask the question "Are you there yet"

Welcome to the forum Pubic, yeah go the crawler gears. Is it a short wheel base sierra? if so you may not fit twin transfers in anyway, and if it is a short wheel base, you might want to extend the wheelbase when you put the 35s on. Are you going leaf or coils?
where's the pics?

PUBIC... last name hair.
number plates PUB-11K
i was going to keep it as a leafy. budgeting you see.
the only reason the diffs and 35's are going under it is because my mate stripped his lux and gave me a good deal on them.... otherwise i would have locked up the sierra diffs and ran f100 sunnys with bigger offset
pics to come soon. i'll be sure to take photos as i progress through each tormenting issue.
thanks for the welcome,

im in NSW, penriff.
i want it set up for rock crawling / mud / trails etc i have not been in the whole 4wd scene for very long at all and guess it will need to be an all rounder to start with until i decide what exactly it will be used for. i want to be able to register it, i need to get to where i want to drive it.
i have a work truck i can transport suzi q on if i need to travel too far, but would still like to be able to use it to duck up the street if needed.
im beginning to think the 35's may be too big, i have considered 33's, mainly because i wont need as much reduction in gearing, i got my 35's for $700 90% tread, if i was to get a new set of 33's id be looking at around $1000 for rubber alone. or does anyone have any suggestions of decent tyres for a cheaper price???
will there be much of a gain having the 35's rather than the 33's

Hey mate , 33's are a little small as the lux diffs bottom with the extra width , especially rock climbing , also the wheel base would need to be stretched to avoid scrubbing unless you plan to do some guard cutting. The best way to set it up would be to have minimal up travel and lots of down travel , chop the guards and keep it as low as possible. I run 35's with 4.88 diffs and stage 4 rockhopper gears , 1.3 litre engine with some mods , it will run down the freeway at a 100 quite easy , but 5.11 would be better , what you plan to do is not a easy thing and pretty much the tyre size will dtermine how much work you need to do:
To run 35's you will need to:
Stretch wheel base.
Modify tailshafts.
Modify handbrake mechanism if you use the hilux one.
Front and rear shock top mounting positions.
Some type of anti wrap bar.
Longer , thicker U-bolts.
Brake line mods , front and rear , longer flexible hoses , braide are the best to avoid brake faid.
Steering , drag links.
Larger steering dampener.
Fuel tank mods to stop wheel rubbing on filler pipe and the diff centre hitting it.
Filler pipe mod.
Rear tail shaft angle as you will have to battle to angle's instead of one , down and sideways. This can cause vibrations if not done right.
Be prepared to do some chopping and welding , on articulation you will find the rear quarters and the front guards will scrub bigtime.
Relocation of bump stops.
And to register you will need engineering , plus a weigh bridge ticket for gross vehicle mass , this works out to be the tare weight plus each passenger , which is calculated at 75 kilo's per person plus a small ammount of luggage , so therefore if you are over your gross vehicle mass , you might be asked to remove the backseats as I had too. Rollcage construction may also cause the removal of the back seats as well making it a two seater.
Then comes power to weght ratio's , if your too heavy and don't have enough acceleration or power , you might have to upgrade the power plant.
Brakes are okay as they are out of a larger vehicle.
I had no problems with 15 x 8 rims as the wheel track was within standard hilux specs. Tyre size was also okay as it has good acceleration.
Don't be put off with what I have said above but you need to reallise it is a much bigger job than you think , it won't get done in a weekend , so if this is your daily driver , you will need to keep it going.
I'm not far from you so P.M. me your details and I'll take you for a run , Cheers Paul.
P.S. For the wank factor twin transfer levers make twin auto locked trucks easier to turn by almost 1/3.

cheers steve, great links, thanks muchly. they're not as expensive as i thought. my birthday is coming up i will have to harass the girlfriend
paul, thats all excellent feedback champ thanks alot, would love to check out your truck. alot of the stuff you had written i had considered, more i have not. but all taken on board.
i have a work truck to get around in so if the zook is of the road for a little while it wont matter too much but the longer its off the road the more annoyed i'll get. i need to plan as much as i can before i start i guess.
any one got photos of their lifts in detail, ie body lifts, different styles of shackles??? just for some extra ideas.
would muchly appreciate it.

picked up my new diffs yesterday
to my amazement my mate had forgotten to mention to me that he had them sprung over, with high steer arm and j bracket.
i am considering no longer doing the gti conversion, i was offered a 90 model corolla with 4age 1.6l twin cam efi... complete car. is this conversionmuch harder? i have heard i will need a supra gearbox. does anyone know much about these conversions?
does anyone want a gti motor in need of big end rebuild??? i have heard that gti head and internals can be transferred to sierra motor.$200 ono

i can find out how much tnt would be to get it up there if you like. i can put it on my work account and you can just transfer the cost to my account.. depends how keen you are.
i have never started it or heard it running. just so you know. i dont want to shaft anyone. i only bought it cos it was cheap and is supposedly an easy transfer.

sweet as islandvit.
what box best suits the 4age motor???
im tossing up between the supra, celica and sprinter box.
i have read that the supra box is indestructable.
im more so concerned though about the overall length.
i was given a hilux t/case with the diffs. my question is do i run the zook case or the hilux?
the zooks is already there and bolted to the truck.
but if i have to move it to accomodate the new engine and box would it be worth putting the hilux case in? the lux is relatively heavy and im assuming would be alot heavier than the zook.
is there much strength difference in the hilux to zook?

how do you stretch the wheel base?
do you move the leaf mounts back on the back and forward on the front?
or is there a better way??

I think the cable sprinter box is the best to use but also hardest to get
the supra one (G52??) also fits a lux so you might be able to run a hilux case and 4age, be a lot neater
I am reserving this spot for an anti toyota crap in a suzuki rant too

sounds like an idea.
cheers royce.
would it be worth stretching the wheelbase and then running the zook transfer case aswell or just put reduction gears in the hilux case?
i know im asking a million questions and all of them are in different directions, but i'd like to be sure of the best options i have. and where else would you ask bar here

sounds good to me.
so as a sum up so far this is what is planned.
4age
supra box
lux transfer case
lux locker diffs SPOA
35" BFG muddies
extended shackles
i need to extend the wheel base (this is to stop wheelies when climbing i guess)is this done by moving the leaf spring mounts?
i will have to extend brake lines, this is to allow for extra flex and lifts.
will a body lift be getting on the dangerous side of things??
what is better to do? body or shackles?
i have been told that to keep/ gain better flex to use flatter springs rather than lifted. is this true, to my understanding the reasoning behind this is that it is much harder to flex a smaller radius (which is what you would have with a spring lift) than a set of shocks closer to standard shape.
ok get ready to slang me... what is an anti wrap bar??? and while your at it.... drag links
i will need to get tailshafts made, is there anywhere anyone would suggest?
i am also considering using the corolla fuel tank, mainly for the fact that its fuel pump is suited to the engine. i will have a larger tank too.

The Hilux transfer cases are bolted to the Hilux gearbox, so how will that fit on to the back of a Supra gearbox?
"dangerous" ? I think you've past dangerous
easiest would be the Supra gearbox and sierra transfer case. I'll get pics of Craigs this weekend. He has this setup in his car. The transfer case is moved back a few inches because the Supra gearbox is a bit longer, and the shaft is very short between the gearbox and tranfser case.
Lots of people run 35s with the sierra transfer case (crawler gears ofcourse)
anti wrap bar stops your rear diff from twisting your springs as you power on. I'm sure we can post some pics for examples when we find them.

pics of his set up would be awesome. it would take a lot of guess work uot of the equation.
past dangerous and deep into fun teritory
would it be worth making up a spacer to suit both layouts of holes on supra box to lux case??? ie one side had lux layout drilled and tapped and the other had supra???
does anyone know of anyone with a supra box for sale???

go do some googling about the boxes, lots of toyotas, not too many gearboxes so lots came with different combinations front and rear, so you put the front on for the engine you want and the transfer that suits on the back
pretty sure 80 series used the same box as a supra so there is your transfer on the back and 4age on the front
I had a link once but lost it, cause toyota stuff is all gay anyway
