Im watching your progress closely as if it works i might do the same in my new GV
B4T
2 pin Vitara side gear has a strange shape around its edge that MAY foul the locker? 2pin Sierras may be same??
The Sierra carrier has a removeable bit to get at the innards. It holds the bearing too. The Vit axle wont fit thru it...tho You could get it milled out to fit, I think

trail tough says vit fronts are 3 pins, an email from them said it was very fiddly to fit and set up locker, so they sell it in the carrier
Mine is only 2pins, so think I'll put the sierra locker into my vitara carrier. Maybe not as strong as a 4pin, but I don't thrash it anyway.

I took a Vit carrier to an engineer shop (in Sydney) and had them drill a hole in the right spot to convert it.
It cost me about $50 but got me out of exactly the same situation you have.

Yes did have that thought this morning.
But I think 2 pins will be ok, hope I am right.
It is going in nicely.
Vit carrier also has a locating cotter pin, so shaft can't fall out..so much happier with that.
Think I am winning.

Locker fitted perfectly into Vitara carrier.
Was unlocking on floor with lots of effort.
Hopefully driving will unlock it more easily.
Diffs back under car.
Can't test yet, need to fix up a cv boot and stuff,
and fit the drive shaft tomorrow.
Will hate wondering all night if locker will work right this time,
but I done for the day.
knackered and cussing too much, must be time to stop.

YAY TEAM
We are now locked up front.
No issues with using a Sierra auto locker into a Vitara.
As long as You have the 2 pin type, which every one seems to have.
And use Sierra 4 pin type side gears.
2 pin type MAY foul on locker
Same fitting technique, except you start at other end.
It took a while to free up, now it is much smoother.
Not as smooth as my rear Lock Rite, but it should bed in.
Thanks ALL for support, help, parts, and ideas along the way.

It was in car when I bought it.
Can't help with part number.
I will ask original owner, if he back from os.
pretty sure lowrange offer a rear lock rite for vits?
I believe back diff is is physically bigger and vastly different from the front.
I'm guessing Sierra lock rite won't fit in a rear Vit diff, but don't actually know.

Hopefully Joeblow knows the answer and adds his 2c's

rear vit diffs are cheap and plentiful,
probly as they last well, and usually dont get harmed in wrecks.
If an early model rear centre will go in, that could be good.
I don't mind the rear lockers handling, easy to adjust too, but I do dislike the drive line slack it produces, especially in an auto.

drive line slack is due to it not being shimmed up properly. my font s perfect but rear has slop from the ctr not the pinion. a shim or 2 would tighten it up just nicely.

GV centre, ring and pinion sold to a bloke in Tasmania, sorry,
the 4.3 ratio is a good thing for some Jimnys apparently.
I have used it in 4wd only on dirt roads,
it is getting smoother with use.
Running in I guess.
Going out with club on easy day tomorrow,
I should be able to test it better then.
PS I still have the sierra rear side gears if you want them.

grave dig.
so this ended up with gv steel housing, vitara centre, vitara side gears? (mine are 26 spline) and sierra spartan locker
how do you like this in the front, as in effects on steering?
mainly just bumping this so i can find it again

Yes that is correct, I'm using 22 spline, as I had lots of them spare. I'm loving it. Steering is plenty easy with Vit power steer. Sometimes in slimy stuff, needs a power squirt to get a direction change. Rarely makes any noise. Extremely happy. No broken CV's since fitted

Righteo. I've done all the reading on earth. Its clear now that I can get the spartan locker into the vitara carrier, even though its a two pin. I guess you just dont use the other pins. Did you use the shims also? or does the spartan not come with shims. with the side gears, i notice you say you used your sierra ones without the lip... So I'll pobably have to buy those side gears , without the lip as the vitara one i have has the lip.

People have told me they have used the lipped gears with no problems. No body has said they didn't work, so I guess it is up to you.
Yes just leave out the cross pin not needed, or some people get centre drilled to accept the extra pins. I didn't, not had any problems, though may be a good idea.
Spartan instal instructions stress that shims not be used, I guess the machined to fit without. I removed all my shims, ir runs smoother than my lock rite one.
