Hi Guys,
I have been a long time browser of these forums, and they have always been very interesting!
I am finally about to buy myself a 1992 SWB Sierra with a stock 1.3 carby in it. At the moment it has 29 inch tyres that are in pretty good nick.
I am going to buy some reduction gears from lowrange offroad as the Aussie dollar is so good at the moment, but would like some advice on what ratio gears to get.
I do a decent amount of driving on freeways / highways so needs to be good on road but also have good crawling ability.
I will be fitting at least 31's down the track but will keep the stockers for now. What ratio gears would you guys recommend? Would the 4.9:1 be suitable?
I am also going to get one of the spartan lockers, and I know this is an age old question, but do you think it will perform better in the back or front? Obviously front would have benefits as it wont be engaged most of the time, but back has more weight over it when crawling uphill.

My personal opinion is 6.5's reduction, with that said though, i'm already running 31's and my next set will be32's or 33's.
4.9's seem to be the weapon of choice for 31's i've heard... I know a few people who run them and love them (with the exception that they think 3.9 diff would be better with them than 3.7's)
Really depends on your wheel work and what you drive.
As for the locker... its a different for every person...
BUT i'm pretty sure if you put it in the front you will have to get chromo's because most lockers have a 26 spline side gear and the sierra front diffs have a 22spline axel.
Just some food for thought (i may be wrong in the above stated)

with 6.5's and stock tyres, the revs are going to be pretty high in 5th at 80km/h..
I would suggest 4.9's. Then if you go larger than 31's. You can always change diff gears if needed.
I have always had a rear locker. Front has been needed, but not stopped me.
Where abouts are you? What stuff are you able to drive?

Just FYI, 29 inch tyres are not stock, so the 4.9s will actually work quite well with them.... A little lower than standard gearing but perfectly drivable.
6.5s with small tyres would get tiresome on the road though...

I have 29's and 4.16:1 t-case gears. 100kph in 5th = 3500rpm. The gears are perfect for that size tyre, but would not be low enough for 31's.
I'd go 4.9:1

Cant be any worse then the 4.8's vit difs i'm running atm. haha 4200Rpm at approx. 100kmh

Thanks for the replies guys. 4.9:1 seems to be the way to go!
I live in Sydney so also got to travel a decent distance to get to any sort of fun track... legally anyway.
