I lunched my crownwheel n pinion a while ago and now its time to get around to a rebuild. Anyone got any special tricks to finding the pinion shim size?
Im putting a 2nd hand set of 3.7's into my centre (they are good condition) and the manual lists several special tools which I obviously dont have.
A joint in Moorabbin wants $440 to do the rebuild with me supplying all the bearings and crush tube. They have done it plenty of times before to suzuki diffs and sounds like they know what they are doing, but I cant justify spending that kind of money when im a mechanic myself but with no access to special tools.

Do you have a torque wrench and a fishing hang scale?

Dial gauge is handy for setting the backlash.

Have you got the FSM? It has all the info you need.

when you put the crown gear on put it in the oven for 15 min on 180

Nah setting the backlash and preload is as simple as stepping in dog shit. Its getting the right teeth contact with shimming of the pinion is what im asking about.

yeah PJ I spoke to Cam mate and he explained that you'll probably need to grab some shims if you can't get a good pattern after setting the backlash and bearing preload. May as well get it done properly first time, 150 from joe is a good offer.
