That guy is a wanker..that will never work Garden hose is still going strong after 14 months also....just for all those non believers

Of course those of us who don't recommend PVC based hose on breathers are just saying it for the sake of it. We've never seen a hard, perished PVC hose on a breather, or looked under a car with PVC breathers and said "you might want to fix that"

There's better material than PVC for breathers.

Expensive breathers are cheaper than a diff rebuild.

For those of us who do not have big $$ budgets it is an alternative. I regularly check the hoses for cracks and perishing, hell I have enough spare to remake them 3 times over. I don't doubt that you haven't seen perished hoses.......congratulations . I am simply saying that the way I have done it has worked for me and I like it. It was cheap and simple, required no drilling of diff's, x/fer or gear box to accomadate the 'expensive' breather kits. I rarely do water in my zook so it serves the purpose to which I require it to do so.

I think you are having a bit of a dig at me here but I have no idea why. I don't have a big budget and I don't think that choosing the right material for diff breathers requires much skill. I'ts been well covered.

Did you even price fuel hose?

Using material that becomes brittle when in contact with oil as a diff breather, even when it's been clearly explained that it's a bad idea doesn't look like sound reasoning for someone on a budget. The small (if any) difference in price is more than made up for by the fact it will last and you won't have to wonder whether it's become brittle or not.

I'll add couple of other things.

A) When PVC becomes embrittled by contact with hot oil, it might look fine, but one of the first things that happens is that because it looses its flex, it also looses its grip on the stub you've hose clamped it to, so even with the hose clamp done up, it will pull off easily.

B) When embrittled, it won't take much of a knock for it to split, which will more often happen offroad rather than when you've thought to check them in the driveway. Of course you will only notice the lost breather once your diff gets all noisy on the drive home and you're up for 5 times what the breathers owed you, or 20 times the price difference between PVC and fuel hose.

I'll just reiterate. Buying 30m of PVC hose on the grounds it's cheap is false economy. Firstly because you are better off buying the right amount of the right material, (especially when the right amount is a sixth of what you bought) and secondly because the risk of a failure is higher with the "cheaper" material, and the cost of the failure outweighs the cost of using the right material.

Logic says it makes no sense to use PVC once you know there's even a small chance of it failing prematurely considering the costs associated with the breathers and a failure.

Sorry for the surly response Rusho, but your assertion that you used the wrong material knowingly because you don't have my budget is just nonsense.

I just did mine in reinforced fuel line and 2 x motorcycle fuel filters, cost me $38 all up and have enough fuel line left to hook up the g/box when I get a chance! 30 minute job tops
