Hey guys,
My sierra has a G16A carby vitara motor that is mated to the sierra gearbox using the Ben T adaptor kit. Problem is that my starter motor is not engaging on the flywheel and it looks like its because of the adaptor. How could I fix this? has anyone else had this problem?
I was thinking of seeing if I can get the starter motor face that bolts flat against the bellhousing machined down somehow to make the starter motor splines to stick further in..

i'm pretty sure you need to grind some metal off the starter motor, a sierra guru will know more....

if the starter bolts in I cant see where it could interfere

Was engaging before or have you just put this starter motor in and it's not engaging?

with the adaptor plate you arent moving the flywheel or clutch any further away than when it (the engine) was bolted directly to the gearbox , you are only moving the gearbox away a few mm , so its not a problem with the adaptor plate . im guessing the solenoid isnt throwing out the starter pinion gear

sorry guys, spoke to ben T and he cleared it up for me. The vitara starter I just bought has 9 teeth on the gear, whereas the sierra starter only has 8. Somehow need to swap the gear from the old sierra starter onto the vitara starter. does anyone know how?

apparently it shouldn't make a difference.. hmm i'm stumped on this one. I'll re install it again tomorrow and see what happens!

still no good, turn the key and it just makes that grating sound. Its a brand new narrow vitara starter motor so it should just bolt straight in and work.. anyone had this problem before?

grating sound? like a really loud grind sound??? could be the ring gear...

was the gear on the fly wheel in good nic? ie not missing teeth?

grating sound like the ring gear not engaging on the flywheel . I went to a mechanic and he said that the vitara starter ring gear doesnt come out far enough to engage on the flywheel.

fly wheel is still good, not missing any teeth mate

The guy who owned it before me had it done at the suzi store so I have no idea... how could you tell?

alright I took the car to the SuziStore in Midland and the guys reckon the ring gear is chewed off and buggered due to the Sierra starter not being bolted up square. Bought a new ring gear and will be installing it asap so I can go wheeling. Will update here

how much was the ring gear? yearrrs ago mine stripped some teeth and i think i paid about $30 from suzistore for one off a wreck. lol

I've got uni exams next week so it ended up taking it to a mechanic to get done so I can study. The ring gear cost me like $56 from suzistore. I hope I can go wheeling weekend after this one!

Would love to come on that powerlines trip but unfortunately I already planned with some mates to head up to moore river for a camp saturday night and heading to lano for the sunday. Are you going to go on the big trip being held on the 28th?

i got some custom rims, which are being powdercoated (they forgot they had them when i called mid-week, otherwise i'd have them today) next week and KM2's (31x10.5). Rims are 15x7-38 Chev Rally centres with ROH bands.

alright back on track..
I got the car back today, now I have a new ring gear and the vitara starter on it.. still problems!!!
It engages on the flywheel now and starts easily, but the gear on the starter is going too far onto the flywheel and can't disengage quick enough so it makes a very loud whirring sound...
could this be because the diameter on the starter gear is slightly bigger and has 9 teeth rather than 8 like the original ones?? I'm starting to lose patience with this now haha

its a reduction starter yeah? sounds like a space ship winding up? believe it or not its almost classed as normal, I think its the starter spinning a smaller flywheel

call suzistore on your mobile, get shaun to hear it over the phone - he'd be able to tell you pretty quick if its normal =)

I don't know if it's a reduction starter... do reduction starters have more teeth on them?
Definitely sounds like a space ship taking off hahaha. Hope it doesn't hurt the starter. I'll see if I can upload a sound file of it and see what you guys think
