just a question...is the vitara your going to put it in, does it have an "air flow metre"?? if so i would not put an oil based K&N filter as the oil resedue comes of the filter and over the AFM and can actually damage the electrodes and there for will make your car run like shit.. every person who comes into our work wanting them when they upgrade with a snorkel we recommend the stock standard paper filter as for the reasons and plus its collecting cleaner air threw the head of the snorkel... just thought id put that out there just for the information.. (any ARB store will recommend the same thing and tell you the same answer)

Why not see what K&N have to say on that? There is a section of their website that specifically deals with oil contamination of hot wire AFMs and over oiling.

I swear buy my K&N filters. I run one in the grand vitara. They are only around $150 and a stock filter is around $40 now so it doesn't take long to pay for itself.
As long as you clean the filter each service they are good which is more maintainence than a standard filter. I have had my GV in some real dusty conditons and no dust has got through. I put a smear of grease in the clean side of the airbox and have not seen any dust that has got through. This is a trick from Enduro riding to see if your filter isn't oiled or sealed properly.

The uni filters are really good too. IMO oiled filters are the best for dusty conditions.

I agree - did the same with my GV.

You can hear the sound of induction as soon as you replace it - without sounding crazy it sounds like the engine is breathing a little easier. performance wise you probably won't notice much difference - but the trick is keep them well oiled!

After cleaning the filter, uniformly and slowly add the oil - total process for me usually takes a couple of hours, that includes cleaning, drying, reoiling. Willl do it everytime i service the car

You really don't want to that.

Here's what K & N says in their FAQ ...
Quote:
4. How often do I need to clean my K&N air filter?

If you have not experienced a decrease in mileage or engine performance, chances are your filter is fine and does not yet need cleaning. To be more specific, the filter does not require cleaning if you can still see the wire screen on the entire air filter regardless of how dirty it may appear. When the screen is no longer visible some place on the filter, it is time to clean it. When used in normal paved road, street or highway conditions, our replacement air filters that fit in the factory air box should require cleaning every 50,000 miles and our large conical filters on an intake system should require cleaning every 100,000 miles. When used in dusty or off-road environments, our filters will require cleaning more often. We recommend that you visually inspect your filter once every 25,000 miles to determine if the screen is still visible.

I'm sure you service your car a lot more frequently than every 25,000, 50,000 or 100,000 miles - and based on personal experience, frequent cleaning of the K & N cotton filter element causes the cotton gauze to deteriorate prematurely.

hi guys. One thing to take note if people are buying k&n panel filters for their vitaras.

There are 2 different panel filters for a 1.6l 16v vitara. They have different dimensions and make sure you measure yours before commiting to buy.

my vitara has a filter dimension of 284mm x something and it should use K&N part number 33-2654.

Apparently the usual US model sidekicks uses the other model filter.

Just an info for people buying from the states.

I have a K&N for my other 4wd. It was in the car when i bought it. Know it's nailed to my shed wall to remind me to never buy a car that has run a K&N filter. The intake of the vehicle was filled with fine dust.

That was my experience too Mika, but we were wrong. It wasn't dust. It was a fine film of horsepower. Apparently K&N's don't let anything though except the all the extra horsepower particles that get trapped in a paper filter. :D

yeah, i must admit the horsepower loss I noticed when i went back to a stock paper filter was pretty massive, so that would explain it :D

yep thats what KTM told me when I wrecked 3 race motors in one season alll running brand new pre oiled filters. they leaked TOO MUCH fine horsepower through them and it wore out my rings and valves

paper is the only way to go

27th time ive said it but il say it again

thats one web page, talking about one test, done buy a bunch of random guys nobody knows, its not good enough in my opinion to keep waffling on about it

Do we all get AC delco filters now? they are pretty damn cheap around here so whats to say they are all good?

It also shows that filters can be randomly crap, how do we tell whats what then? whos going to test a ryco and see what happens?

Was the K&N tampered with? was it serviced before hand? did they bother to investigate its results?

Ive seen filters tested by oil analysis, IE old engine oil is tested for dirt in it, Oiled foam won hands down, why didnt they test one of them?

The web page I posted was mostly for Suziblu with reference to the testing procedures outlined in ISO 5011, predictably though, the paper filter performed best.

I am aware that oiled foam can provide good results when used in the right circumstances. However, from experience, oiled foam filters are a messy PITA to service and prevent cyclonic airboxes from working properly, loading up the filter and therefore shortening service intervals. That's just my personal experience though, and as some guy from the internet, I have no idea.

I'm sure a K&N can provide good results in the right circumstances. (i.e not in an off road car) Where there is a requirement to filter lots of fine dust. Once again, that's just my personal experience.

The real problem with the choice of air filter medium is that many people have the wrong end of the stick. As off road drivers, we shouldn't be looking for any increase in flow through a given air filter element size at all as it will indicate a loss in filtration performance. If the engine requires more air than the stock filter can provide, we should be looking for a larger (and better designed) air box rather than a filter that lets more dirt into our engine by design, or requires critical service procedures or it becomes plugged or ineffective.

It's another example where performance road/race car thinking doesn't apply to our application.

For air filter tech that's relevant to our application, look at off highway equipment like excavators, or off road race buggies designed for long distance racing. In those applications you will find the predominant filtration medium is paper and the airbox designs are very similar - a variation on a Donaldson cyclopac housing which by design, keeps the majority of the dust away from ever reaching the filter.

Any one seen the filter cleaner setup on LeTourneu Loaders? It blasts compressed air back through the filter every so often to loosen the dust build up in ther filter.

The filter systems in the tops of grain silos are the same, when they measure a pressure drop they blast air in to clean them
