well the idea was to try and pull the motor and gearbox out in one, so today i went to figure out how to remove the gearstick, i removed the knob, the bottom plate with 3 bolts, the washer under that and found the bush under that had perished pretty bad and as i was pulling that out the stick come out, wasn't sure if it was meant to come out so easy?, anyway my problem now is that i went to put the stick back in to make sure it was as easy as that and try to select some gears, stick goes in fine, feels like its in neutral, but wont select any gears? have i done something wrong? broken something? i dont have a bush in there or the plate bolted down but still thought it should select gears

was it in neutral when you pulled it out? sounds like you are putting it in off to teh side of the gates, peer into the hole and youll see the slot it goes into, its not easy but it goes in

have a look at the pics in this thread, it will give you an idea of lining up the shift rails.

you can undo the 4 bolts that hold the gear stick houseing in and (tap) it off with a hammer makes it easer to get the screw driver in to make the gates line up
