So.. where is yours and what is it!? Im in the market for a new one.. the old handheld is givin me grief. So Ideas please guys..

The NT dash isnt the best spot for extra bits, so i have been looking into the removable(placement) units such as the uniden 015? and gme 4320?
if im right.. detachable face models anyway.. to put in below the two middle dash vent but above the heater control.. on THAT rectangular lip.. NT guys will know what im jabbering about.....

so where is yours? pics would be great, but if you can describe it nicely that is also appreciated. Over head consol would be good but unsure once the top comes off..

post away!

when i had my nt soft top....i had a tait t-2020 uhf (comercial unit) with a remote head...i had the body of the radio mounted in the glove box, drilled a hole in the back and ran the remote head cable up around the windscreen surround up to the top of the windscreen and attached it up there......worked really well......didnt have a problem with it getting wet as i had the top on if it rained.......u can get the GME tx3400 with remote head (just have to extend the cable) and do the same thing

i had a GME detachable head unit thingy. I had the main unit in the glovebox, and the head on top of the dash in the center.

ive got the previous model GME remote head

Image

box is above the glovebox in a void in the dash and a speaker next to the handbrake

had the same in my WT with the unit on top of the dash and in my 1 litre same again but teh box was under the metal dash top so pretty secure against theft

I've got a GME TX3220 mounted under the stereo right at the bottom. Probably wouldn't fit there if I didn't have the body lift though, the gear stick would hit it.

I've got an old ex-Telecom (yes Telecom, not Telstra!) FM-900. The head unit is stuck on the dash with double sided tape  and the rest of it is screwed to the floor under the driver's seat. I would suggest you find a better spot for the main unit though, as you'll drown it for sure. Unfortunately the FM-900 is so bloody big I haven't got a spot for it anywhere else!

I got rid of the standard radio holder and bolted the cd player and cb where it use to go piggy back style. Have a slight bend to clear it good spot out of the way but within reach.

guess I SHOULD put a pic of the dash in so you can throw some more ideas in.. lol.. my bad.. was meant to be at the start but got sidetracked.. as per usual!

Anyway.. what I got to work with..and what I originally intended...
text says: "Run cable through dash into main unit"
Image
the UH gets some great reviews by some people and others bag uniden themselfs having owned previous models.. The GME range seems to be highly recomended and very capable. Guess it all comes down to personal preferance.. and what you want out of the radio huh.

For me.. the + side of the uniden is this is their flagship model.. so you would be lead to believe everything works to the utmost without flaws or needing repairs.. coupled with the built in scanner, a nifty feature by all accounts, and from what im lead to believe a 'cableless' remote head?!(can anyone confirm or deny this for me please!??) It is also listed from my searches as being a reasonable price CHEAPER than the GME unit.

The + for the GME is by far their recomendations by others, their ability to withstand a harsh-heavy duty application. Obviouly looking at their 3220 model with its Wired head unit, still locatable, yet still wired.. Being Made In Australia with the 3-5 year warranty is also very beneficial should it be required. GME also seem to be available at alot more shop front stores than the Uniden equivilant. leading me to believe the backup/customer service/GME reps are alert and onto any faulty or broken products.

Sigh..

Still havent decided between the two. and have found no others that really fit the requirements(size-quality-price)

Am heading towards the GME unit but with encouragment might sway to the uniden.

Cheers for reading my rambles guys.. If anyone else is in a similar situation or looking for a radio, what else have you considered!?

I just brought the uniden uh015sx (detached face) from the 4x4 show for $370 with an aerial and 5 year warranty. the GME ones were around $450.
easy to install only took an hour and a half for the whole thing. by the way they are not a wireless setup.

I mounted the unit under the glove box and the faceplate in the spot where my ash tray normally goes (not a smoker, never use it anyway).

I'll get some pics up after the long weekend.

Hey guys a got a 88 Sierra WT and i think i found the best spot to mount one ( if your a non smoker). I just pulled out the ashtray and measured its dimensions and a CB would fit perfectly in there ( with a few modifications that are very small ) but other than that would fit awsome

I am thinking of getting the "UNIDEN UH015SX" which has all the cops and ambo channels aswell. the dimensions for this one are
"36mm (H) x 127mm (W) x 157.5mm (D)."

And the Ash Tray is

"30-35mm (H) x 120 mm (W) x 170mm (D)

with a bit of cutting and hammering i think it would fit in perfectly

it will have the police channels as long as you arent in brisbane....as brisbane have gone over to a digital system now....last time i checked a lot of the other areas in qld are still on the old analogue system

Where do you put your spare change then?

I'd be stuffed if I don't have some loose coins in the car.

how does it go in the little compartment next to the clock?
