Hey all, my engine is out and it's about to be taken to pieces to be rebuilt by headtorque,
first off is it worth getting anything performance wise done to the engine or are the gains not worth it?
secondly what mods should i do whilst it's out?
i'm about to write a shopping list of stuff to get, i'm thinking like gaskets and a water pump,
but thats all i can think of so far,
what ideas do youse all have?

Plugs, leads, oil & filter, radiator replace or service, clutch, air cleaner, radiator/heater hoses, engine mounts.. Basically you want to check and service or replace anything connected to the engine while it is away so when you get it back all you have to do is fit it and enjoy.

Royce, I have looked into cams, and do not know what to get, and what sort of performance gains will be had.
What do you recommend rev wise, the lower, 2,55-4,000 or the higher which can go up to 7,000
When I do the 1.6 into the maruti I will rebuild while its out, but dunno about cams, or maybe just a balance and cc.

As far as I know they only offer 1 cam for the 1.3, either way I would be inclined to go for the lower band one, unless you were building something that otherwise supported breathing that high and you intended to use those revs all the time
Remeber if you have more power down low your less likely to need to ring its neck like a stocker so it wont have to rev as hard

Yea thats what I was thinking, but when at full flight and onto approach I am normally at valve bounce revs and as this is the only way I get anything out of the little donk, its what im used to.
Isnt the 1.3 and 1.6l cams interchangeable with the 1.6l
Im not so sure about the EFI, I can't do the wiring, no way, but can go the carby route, so I believe everything is interchangeable.

Done plugs leads, will need oil cause it will be apart, already got a new filter, done the mounts. and has a new airbox and filter, so most of that is sorted, cept for the clutch and radiator, radiator looks fine, never went past 2 thirds of the gauge when i was giving it hell, RIKSTR wrote: Clean up all the wiring in the engine bay Done JrZook wrote: Overhaul the carb, make sure its 100% also done it's a reconditioned carb from suzi store barely been on more than 1000k's 31zook wrote: cam and carby rebuild. my cam put's out more pony's now
so your stock cam is putting out more ponies after being rebuilt?
so short list at the moment is
service the radiator
get a new clutch
replace coolant hoses
some sort of cam shaft
water pump
what about boring or head work? my builder thinks i wont appreaciate the power difference for the price

i'd be balancing the whole motor while it's apart & match port the head to the inlet & exhaust manifolds.... and don't forget to do the gaskets.

this is the idea i had, balancing because it's such a high reving motor, and then the match porting to make better use of the extractors and the exhaust

skim the head to raise compression 3/4 of a point, it will be the best $50 you ever spend on a performance mod for a sierra, but you will have to run it on 98+ octane fuel for the rest of its life. My 1.3 sierra has this done and is a huge improvement over every other 1.3 with 31's i have driven (quite a few)

lol that's another thread another time, but since it's here i plan on the 2" body 2" spring and bigger wheels so about another 1" there 5" over all i guess, but there's no point in that unless she runs!
so
Skim the head + match porting
new camshaft
balance the crankshaft
new clutch (any suggestions?)
Radiator service and coolant hoses
gaskets
fluids
i took water pump off the list, just removed the old one and looks to be in real good nick, still good bearings and the rotors are nice and shiny not rusty or anything
so bigger pistons still not worth it? has anyone gone 40thou?

no i got a lower power band cam grind, i also got my head fully rebuilt with new rocker rod's, seals, valves, high compression pistions, my block shaved and the head shaved, all completly balanced and everything in it is new. then i got my carby rebuilt, tuned, dyno'd and jetted for more power...
thats a 3.5K tag and 4 months so it adds up quick
im not sure what the effect the cam has but after about 4500-5000 the power band drops away fairly quickly.... it sotra insures that i don't rev the life outa my 1.3

well, at the moment i'm not too worried about price, i just wanna know what to tell the builders to do first time, rather then call them up half way and change my mind like (which would piss them off) and get a good idea of what parts i need ready at home for when it goes back in
i never rev mine past 4.5k mostly cause it sounds terrible (only small muffler in exhaust) and also cause it sounds wrong too the engine, sometimes if i'm pushing it it will go to 5, but when it drops down revs into the next gear it picks up quicker, so it seems 5k is the correct spot for stock cam, but i don't think the engine will last long doing that in it's current state

my budget has decreased massively so i'm looking at
boring out 40thou
skimming the head
balancing the crank
in that order depending on funds
but still should be good, i can do camshaft and match porting another time
