When replacing the side seal on my GV about 2months back, we destroyed the snap ring when removing the inner CV, and the replacement supplied by the CV place was the incorrect size, and as a result after about 6 weeks it lost its grip, and allowed the CV to slide in and out about 10-15mm

So on Sunday pulled the driveshaft again to replace the snap ring, put a 2nd new seal in as well in case the previous one was damaged by the movement, and also replaced the front struts. Got under it last night to clean the oil left from the leak, and its pouring oil out from somewhere round the new seal   There seems to be a bit of movement of the CV in the diff - is this normal? It is held securely in place so it can't move in and out by the new snapring, so its not the same problem....but the movement is around the axis, as though its not a tight fit somewhere....

The only thing I can think of is that the diff may be overfull as I filled it with the front jacked up still - but I wouldn't think that it would cause oil to be pushed out the side seal.. or would it? Any other suggestions as to what the problem may be?

Cheers

James

Overfilling won't make it leak like that, the seal should be able to hold it in. My guess would be damaged seal too. Check the cv where it runs in the seal too, might be damage there. Also check the seal is the right one, does it fit correctly on the cv (before fitting to the diff)?

:( I did think that the seal should hold it all in if over filled, but was hoping that maybe i was wrong.....

The seal was identical to the one I pulled out - seemed to fit fine....Guess I could have snagged it putting it back in .......
last thing I wanted to do was pull the #$^%#$^ing thing back out again :?

leaking seals are good, it's when they stop leaking you should worry. Just keep putting oil in, works for Sierras :)

 Know I know why people buy landrovers! You dont' have to worry when it drips a bit more at some stage.....

My only worry is that if oil can get out, then water/sand/dirt/mud can get in again......and the amount thats coming out makes me think that it'll be running on a nice mix pretty soon

Anybody know an easy way to get the driveshaft out without removing the whole front suspension? Just got the wheel alignment done Monday so didn't really want to touch all the camber bolts again.... :(

put a jack under the front arm, undo the strut at the top and compress it and swing the hub out that way, you might have to put a stand under the chassis and let the suspension down a bit to get enough room but it works pretty easy

Now why didn't I ask this question a long time ago..... i followed the full Suzuki manual, which involves removing every bloody thing except the lower arm (well almost....) - and I followed it twice!
I think I need a banging my head against a brick wall smilie

Will give it a go tonight, and see if I can see what I've done...my only worry is maybe i've damaged the side bearings somehow, as the CV should be moving like it is.......Only one way to find out I guess.....

Sweet - that doesn't worry me, its just the camber pins that I don't want to touch, setting them by eye isn't the best..

Pulled the driveshaft last night, the seal is fine, but here is a heap of movement when the CV is installed - not in and out, but round, which is why the seal can't do its job.

Is it possible to get at the bearing on the drivers side or is that a diff out job?

Couple of photos - not sure if you can see anything....its a bit hard to get any meaningful pics.....I'm worried about the scoring on the CV - is this where the bearing should be running?

perhaps lock the front diff in and try again, might be something loose in the centre
