u have no idea do u, i really fell sorry for u now prolly sitting at home all pissed off and shit go back to your garage then and work up a million more crappy 1 liners of shoving things and sitting down

Can you get a compression test done? If oil is getting past the rings then it should show up in a comp test.

I dont have a tester, But I might take it to a mechanic and get them to do it.

So i take it that if comp is ok, it is water, if comp is bad, then it is rings/oil?

thanks

I going through this whole process as well. And wats making me think is this..
I had a falcon come into me shop. Starting fault. It was autually a leaking head gasket and hydro locking up. But when it did start it blew thick white steam/smoke that hung around for awhile. And did it stink. Just thought I'd though it in there.

there are 2 sets of rings on a piston, the compression pistons that hold the air fuel mix up top and the oil rings that hold the oil down low, usually they wear the same amount so smoke = rings, in this case it could be unrelated if they are mucked up and not working

Mine does the same. This is after a 20 thou rebore and new pistons/rings 12 months ago. Valve stem seals replaced too.

My suspicion is that a ring may have been broken when installed. :?

I hate smokey engines but eventually you just get over it. :(

hahah. Problem is, the guy behind me in traffic will not get over it and i reckon the cops will not like it either!

pretty sure the rings went in ok...although not necessarly the 'right way up'

it could be both. as the compression will either blow past the rings or blow through the head gasket into the radiator.

drive it down to your mechanic quickly ask him if he can do a CO2 test from your radiator fill point would take no more than 5 mins of his time. this should determine if any sneaky gases are sneaking past your head gasket.

WOW......that got outta hand!! haha.

thanks everyone for helping even if you have different opinions.

Sorry to take sides, but i think it is smoke, not steam. Smoke cos it hangs around for ages as i drive down the road!!

However, it is white. Very white with a slight blue tinge i guess. In my limited experience, i would say it is mostly oil.

The head gasket went on the right way up - there was only one way it would fit.

At the end of the day, the evidence fits the crime - "industry standard" of honing any bore a new piston and rings goes to tells the story. I fucked up. - new rings, gaskets, pistons etc but no honing.

Although...just to keep the debate going longer...the smoke has no hint of black or any darkness as suggested it would if oil was blowing past the rings.........

If i cruise down a hill in gear but no accelerator then floor it, it blows huge amounts of smoke. But it is definately WHITE (or basically white)

have u checked your oil colour or smell yet just pull out the dip stick and check???
fuely smell would indicate rings, while milky white oil would be the head gasket eaisest way for u too tell without any more of the fuss from us, is to go outside and check .

OK so where I work is shit, I like what I do (when I do it) I sort of think the industry I am in has a lot of potential but there are just parts that in the current combination will never work so its time to go

so you lot have to work for your forum access, find me a job

Criteria, North Brisbane and not long travel times sitting in shit traffic, but also keen in FIFO stuff if its interesting

Office or Hands on stuff, not interested in selling shit or lying to people to con money from em (so no retail bullshit)

no quals other than half an apprenticeship and a cert that says I know how to tell people what to do, but by now most of you should have half an idea about what i'm like so get seeking and find me something, I suck at reading job ad's

now i know why he is pissed off.

and a serious question how would a fucked fuel pump put fuel into the oil??

dip stick - noticed some small bubbles, but not generally white or milky. That was after a drive.
It smells like oil! haha. Can really smell any fuel...
Does not seem to be using water. But I have only put about 40km's on it.

I dont think it is water - the smell is quite pronounced. Stinks like shit actually.

Asked a few local mechanics if they could do CO2 and compression. They all said, don't bother, it needs honing and I am an idiot for not doing it in the first place.

I am sick of trying to be a mechanic, Looking for a new engine or to sell it to someone who will fix it themselves.
