Gday All.

I've been trying to decide which transfer case ratio to order and I've pretty much decided on the trail creeper 6.5's after using this calculator to work out the final drive ratios for all the gears.

http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html

These are rounded a little bit because of the calculator and my lazy typing but you should get the idea.

The stock transfer ratios (2.268 low and 1.409 high) on the standard 3.7 diffs stack up like this.

Low 1: 30.90
-------------High 1: 19.20
Low 2: 16.51
Low 3: 12.02
-------------High 2: 10.26
Low 4: 8.47
-------------High 3: 7.47
Low 5: 7.37
-------------High 4: 5.26
-------------High 5: 4.58

The stock ratios have heaps of overlap between low and high and as I found out today, it would be nice to have something lower than the stock low 1

I worked out that with the trail creeper 6.5's (6.5 low and 1.7 high) these are the final drive ratio's with standard WT diffs (3.7)

Final drive with trail creeper 6.5's and how they stack up.

Low 1: 88.49
Low 2: 47.28
Low 3: 34.43
Low 4: 24.25
-------------High 1: 23.14
Low 5: 21.09
-------------High 2: 12.36
-------------High 3: 9.00
-------------High 4: 6.34
-------------High 5: 5.52

The only overlap is high 1 and low 5. This seems like it would be much more usable (I only used two gears this afternoon low 1 for ascent/descent and low 2 when it flattened right out) off road. Also the reduction in high range would (if the calculator is right) put it at about 4500 rpm for 110 km/h in high 5th on 235/75R15's

Anyone got any thoughts about it? I know someone recommended 4.16's with 29' tyres but I like the idea of the box having far less overlap (and thus more range) and this giving the future proofing for 31's

Thanks for any suggestions and hopefully it helps any others new to the scene get their head around what the lower ratios will bring. Added a poll so put what you would choose/have chosen.

definitely 4.16! a 235 is near enough to a 29" tyre, roughly an 11.5% increase in size, and your 4.16 gears give a 12% reduction.

i run 5.14 gears with 31s and the reduction is spot on for my driving. unless you're soon to jump up in size, get the 4.16 gears - otherwise, chase down some 4.11 diff centres (harder to find) - they will also give 11% reduction.
