My LJ50 makes a very loud rumble when coasting. Really noticeable at high speed. It sounds very similar to when you drive over a rumble strip line marking on the road. I'm not sure if it happens just when at high speed, or just in forth gear.

I'm basically avoiding coasting at speed whenever possible.

Any ideas?

My Vit did the same thing when I bought it home. Fixed it by putting another tail sharft on. YES surprised me to, I thought it was the diff.
No matter what speed over 50k's back off or cruise and it rummbled.

I threw some new uni's in the original one Friday after 10 months with the spare in and it is all good so may just be the uni's.. Tyr anouthe tail sharft and rule it out first. You may just be surprised by just doing it.

Yeah I'm thinking it must be something in the driveline as it seems very dependant on whether load is being applied.

Borrow a tail sharft and try it as it is a 15min job.

I have had this from a rear tailshaft. 1 of the uni's was seized and hard to turn/move by hand out of the car.

Also can be pinion backlash/bearings/something else loose in the centre

mines doing the same had to get back from perth, at 80 on the speedo was worst then when into sinc later on.
when im at 100 and take load of accelerater all the rumbling stops, then i put foot down starts all up again.

so im assuming its not wheels or bearings there all new, dad recons the same as wetsie and bluesuzy
also thought it could be the clutch.

ive driven about 500k's one night on a diff with excesive backlash. It whines driving and backing off. after 500 k's it was getting quieter.. Also with clamped rear brakeline.. (special thanks again to zooker and chef)

Got me home, Then drove back 350k to our honeymoon holiday spot in our "road car"..1.5yr ago now! jeez.

just had a look under the car, the uni on the front upper driveline was flogged out really bad, about to go.

LJ50 and 80 shafts are interchangeable, but there's bad news with the Uni's. Original LJ50 and LJ80, no, not really easily replacable. The Uni Joint is available as a replacement part, but they are crimped in place. To remove them, you will need to remove the crimps on one side of each cross shaft. To put the new Uni in, you push it in to the crimp and then weld a washer in to hold it.

LJ80 Stockman shafts are the better bet ( and more sought after!) These have larger Uni Joints (same Uni as 1.0lt Sierra) and are retained with circlips making them simple to replace and balance. They are the same size and flange bolt pattern as the LJ50/80.
